Bloke, you're gonna love this:

...Quite possibly the best reason I've heard not to cut up a Credit Card. ("It's bad for the environment")

_____
There's nothing wrong with Credit cards (If you use them reasonably). I have had one since I've been 18, have never missed a payment and never bought anything that I couldn't pay. Why don't I use Cash(or Debit)? Well, my Bank and Credit union both charge me to withdraw money too often (I get 7 transactions a month with my CU and 10 with the Bank) and I don't earn any reward points. (Right now, after having my card for 4 years and putting groceries and cell phone bills on it for 4 years, I have enough to buy something worth around $200)

I've heard people say this before but it doesn't make sense to me. They are still making money from the retailer's end and they are eager to hold on to that cash flow.

I have several credit cards that are fully paid each month, but once I missed a payment due to inattention to the billing cycle. I decided to cancel that card because the billing cycle was inconvenient and I had other cards. You could not believe how quickly the interest and penalty were deducted from that statement as the card rep sweet-talked me into staying with the card. I had not even asked to have the fees deducted, I was just trying to cancel.

By the way, their strategy worked … I still have the card.

If you want a bunch more cable channels AND a lower rate, just tell them that you're wishing to cancel.

As a matter of fact, I did try this with the cable company . . . but it didn't work.

They know there is still no convenient alternative to their semi-monopolistic service.

I pay for my internet service and then subscribe to Netflix and Amazon Prime. With that I have a decent OTA antenna and am able to pick up all the local channels, as well as a bunch of free internet channels through my Roku player on one TV and the "smart" blu ray on the other TV with both players having been Christmas gifts, so no extra cost there. Not counting the internet service, I pay less than $15 per month. It may not be for some folks who desire 100+ channels of cable television, but it works ver well for me.

I am perfectly happy living in an area that has good digital broadcast major networks and a sub-carrier weather channel. I don't miss the latest-greatest cable shows, and on my personal TV the channels usually alternate between the NBC affiliate that has a good in-house weather radar and the local PBS affiliate that has three sub carriers for about as wide a variety of shows that I care to watch.

Just northeast of where I live about twenty miles is a small rural area that by circumstance of its topography happened to be where all (then) three major network affiliates built their towers decades ago, and one of them subsequently leased tower space to the local PBS affiliate. I have true line-of-sight to the towers and the best digital broadcast quality imaginable. In the house I used to live in, I even mounted an old-fashioned VHF and UHF antenna array in my attic and tied it into the cable wiring of the house, and had top-quality broadcast TV in every room desired - FREE!!!

My TW Cable bill is now up to $194 per month for phone, cable, and internet. It seems to go up every-other month, and although I pay extra for faster download and upload speeds, the speeds promised are not what I'm seeing on my machines. But all that is avaiable here is TW Cable, so what can one do?

If I can convince my wife and small children that listening to radio is "where it's at", I can save enough money to buy a new Chinese tuba every year.

I predict the Chinese will go broke. Or Bloke.

TW stock is a good bet as long as fools like me still pay through the roof for mindless inter-train-ment.

Living in Needles, for cable I get a choice between Los Angeles (with the phone company) or Phoenix (with the local cable company) channels. Phoenix is pretty good. You can watch the late local news at 9:00 PM in the winter and 10:00 PM during summer (Arizona doesn't do Daylight Saving Time).
