Fishing Recommendations

Hello everyone!

I will be getting married in June and my best man told me that he and my groomsmen will be getting me a fishing setup for my bachelor party; I'm talking reel/rod, tackle box, tackle, etc. (we're going on a camping/fishing trip). Do you guys have recommendations for quality reel/rod combos for a good price? Tackle boxes you really like? And what are some things that you could not live without in your tackle box?

This is gonna sound like a "talk to your teacher" reply. You need to find out from your friends exactly what type of fish y'all are going after and how you will be fishing for it. Are you fishing from the shore or pier? Fishing by boat? If by boat, trolling or just dropping a line? And certain fish need a specific bait or lure. It's a bit more involved than just tying on a hook and sinker.

True, I was very vague. I guess I should be more specific.

We will be fishing in the North Florida Panhandle in a freshwater pond. We will be doing some fishing from the shore, but we will have kayaks to go out off the shore. I mainly enjoy catching bass and various types of panfish, but am I looking for a recommendation for a good bass fishing pole and such.

Also, I will be moving to Kansas in July and have no idea of the fishing trends up there and I do not know anyone that could point me in the right direction in regards to Southeastern Kansas fishing.

Zebco 404 rod/reel combo . Basic,rugged,cheap and can be found almost anywhere. It's a simple closed face spin cast reel that will do just fine for a sometimes fisherman. I've used them since I was taught to fish at the age of 6 . I had one that lasted 10 years before it plum wore out and I could not get replacement parts.

In ponds, I will usually have some top water baits (Jitterbug, plastic frog, Super spook Jr., Pop-R, etc.), soft plastics (Zoom Super Fluke and Swimmin super fluke jr., worms, lizards), small spinnerbaits, and small jigs (1/8th-1/4 oz.). I will use the top waters at dawn, dusk, and night. The jigs are good when the fish are in deeper cover. The spinnerbaits are good for covering lots of water to find the active fish. Soft plastics are probably the most versatile because they can be fished fast or slow and high or low. If you can figure out what size forage the fish are feeding on, you will get more bites by matching your bait to the size and shape of the forage.

Go to the St. Croix Rods website and look for a bass rod that suits your length and stiffness likes. They will give you enough information to make an informed choice. They make great rods that will last a very long time. I suggest a spinning rod. Bloke said a Sinnoko reel. He is right they make a great reel, but you need to match the weight of the reel to the rod. If you go to a large dealer like Bass Pro Shop or Cabellas you will get good advice. If you have big bucks to spend, go with a G. Loomis Rod and Sinnoko reel.

The good news for you is the set up you get will work well for southern Kansas. They are big bass fisherman there.
