I think it was almost certainly just space junk re-entering the atmosphere. I also think that this probably happens quite often, just not over populated areas (and usually over water).
Either way, it was probably pretty neat to watch. I drove through southern California deserts once at night, and stopped on the side of the road to look at the sky. As an east coaster, I've never seen so many stars, satellites, and stuff flying through the sky. Amazing!
