They were predicting 3 to 5 inches here, possibly more; we have maybe half an inch on the ground. It's still enough to shut things down. See you all on Monday.

update-update:

There is still snow on the ground (here: enough to cover the turf), but mostly gone from the roads.
However, today (next day) is a "gas day", so I will probably sit in this room all day and expel it - in "real time", as well as on TubeNet.

Tennesseans have little, if any, concept of "snow". Having lived in Chattanooga for several years, I understand Blokes trepidation of going out in a inch or two of "snow". They have no concept on how to drive in snow and freak out making it very dangerous out there. Snow in Minnesota starts at 8 or more inches. Anything less is a dusting or flurries.

Snow is a different substance at 0 degrees than it is at 25 to 30 degrees. Ice is too, for that matter. I was up to my home town in northwestern Illinois a few weeks ago and there was snow on the ground and more fell while we were there. We drove around as needed, but we also refrained from driving a few times, i.e., while it was snowing, blowing and below 0. That was mostly overnight into Sunday morning. They called off church services, mostly in rural churches, such as my Dad's church. You also need to take into account that the average age of the congregation is probably well over 70. Heck, we, the generation that moved away, are all in our 60s. But those winters are part of what made us tough. We can still walk the three miles uphill to school through three foot deep snow and three miles uphill home again.

We don't even get real snow here in Georgia. That half inch we just got was as much ice as snow. The road in front of our house is shaded and on a north-facing slope, so it still has ice on it. I haven't attempted to drive anywhere yet. I would have to back out onto the road and turn at the same time. I may have to try to clear off the road first.

The humor of this thread reminds me of an old story. A friend of mine from Wisconsin had a good pointer hunting dog, who he wanted to breed. Well, that dog had 6 puppies and as soon as the pups could see, he placed a part of a pheasant wing near the the litter. Three of the six pups went directly to point. His visiting friend from Tennessee who witnessed the event, said in passing, "not bad for a Yankee dog."

I would have to agree with Bloke being from upstate NY, I see my share of Native New Yorkers who also don't know how to drive in snow and ice. Including my wife who seems to think doing the speed limit is mandatory, rather than the maximum allowed by law on a certain road.
