I deal with this problem at work with the orchestra's road stands.

Manhasset stands shafts are not really rebuildable. Manhasset does sell individual parts, but NOT the actual clutch assembly part you need for the inside of the shaft that is slipping. They expect you to replace the whole stand or they DO sell just the shaft for about $20. Once the clutch wears out, its done. You can use pinch clamps of different sorts if you dont want to replace the whole shaft for $20 in parts from Manhasset.

Inside the concert hall we use only Hamilton stands with the double lips and lock knobs. Much more expensive to buy, but much more robust and 100% rebuildable. if you're considering buying a new stand be sure to check them out.

I purchased one of these a decade ago for my overloaded practice stand here at home. Still working just fine. Cheaper than a new shaft, and never wears out.

An old-fashioned hose clamp tightened on the inner shaft at the height a player wants it?
