Because their size is proportional to the wavelength of the sound they are designed to produce?

(Consults periodic table.) Now if my tuba were filled with Argon or Xenon...

I had to buy big tuba because I need to compensate. So in fact my Bb Kaiser is compensating.

A little-known fact is that the very first large tuba created a standard for all that came thereafter. That huge tuba was the "Ulence" with five valves. The BB flatUlence was a gas to play, particularly blastissimo.
