Spot on, bloke.

I've lost 18 lbs. since April - I was at a high of 208 lbs., now down to 190, with a goal of 180 in my sights. Intermittent fasting (something I used to do as a young man, which I used to call "skipping breakfast", before the hipsters made a name for it), and a low carbohydrate/sugar diet is the key. INSULIN, provoked by sugar, is the enemy, NOT fat.

There is so much information out there now that debunks the whole "food pyramid" crap we were sold as kids - and for good measure, you can add the outdated information about cholesterol, too......

And also, the scale will not always tell the whole story, because as you mentioned, this regimen will help you to retain muscle (which is heavier than fat) while losing stored fat. For example, I can now fit into clothes I wore when I was 175 lbs. (back when I had untreated celiac disease, where I was eating a lot, yet was still starving) even though I *currently* weigh 190.

My advice - find out what foods are used to fatten up our livestock, and then avoid them, assiduously.

I lost 85 pounds in 2013, at age 68, and have not gained any back.
Life is different and better.
My skin hangs off me but I look older than I am anyway and I don’t care how it looks.
Most if not ALL physical issues are easier to manage at a lower weight than at a higher weight.
Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
I do low carb, moderate protein, lots of veggies, and intermittent fasting.
Find what works best for you, then do it.

I’m nearly back to my fighting weight of 225.

I had ballooned up to my pro-bowling score, 250.

I have no idea why...

Drop 50lbs when you are under 30, “you look great!”

Drop 50lbs when you are 50++ “Is he sick??”

Uh, so why don't you just stop carrying around bags of concrete?

But really, that is great news, keep it up.

My weight is flirting with 190, which is about 15 lbs high for me. "Dad bod", I just eat way too much when trying to get my kids to eat..m or finishing the food that they didnt eat. Stupid stuff like that... Nothing that the treadmill shouldn't fix.

It is far easier to not consume calories than to burn them off.

It is far easier to not spend $1 than to have to earn $1.5 to replace it.

Congrats Bloke et al on your fabulous journeys. I started my journey last August at around 275#. I've been fighting acid reflux for the last 10 years, and last summer I had a series of gastric test that showed I needed to do something quick to fix the problem. The gastric team at Mercy sent me over to the bariatric team and I started the r-n-y bypass program. At the end of October I had the surgery and now I'm down to 175#. The program was rough, but with the help of the fit bit and the Baritastic app, which logs everything that I eat, I have been able to change my relationship with food, and have been able to get off of all of my diabetes, BP, and reflux meds. My employer charges us a fat tax of 60 bucks a paycheck if your BMI is over 30, as of this past Thursday my BMI is sitting at 26.8, so I've given myself a bit of a raise. I'm wanting to get down to the 160 to 165 range.

All calories are NOT equal (for example, a 200 calorie can of soda vs. a 200 calorie portion of lean meat) - and, calorie reduction diets are a recipe for failure.

https://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/02/heal ... -loss.html" target="_blank

Exercise IS healthy, and generally good for you, but will not guarantee weight loss. The general problem is exercise makes you hungry, and therefore makes your want to eat more.

Insulin is a powerful hormone - one of its primary functions is to break down nutrients and store it as FAT, so weight loss is therefore impossible in the presence of insulin.

The macro-nutrient that is most "insulin provoking" by far, is carbohydrates (aka SUGAR). Reduce carbohydrates, reduce insulin, reduce fat storage, reduce inches on the waist.

Anybody interested in learning more, I would recommend looking up videos by Dr Jason Fung - he is very clear, without resorting to unintelligible medical lingo.

My wife and I have taken this journey as well. She's dropped 45 pounds, cut her blood pressure meds by 75% and her metformin in half. Her A1C is in the normal range and her fasting blood glucose is as well. I've dropped 40, my A1C is at 5.2 and no other meds. Cutting out the sugar and the alcohol has been key, along with the grains. Just can't tolerate them. I'm about to ungrow (or is it still outgrow?) my clothing for the third time since January. Good think I kept the skinny clothes...
