Advice for highschool students
What are some things you wished you would've known in middle/ high school? Marching band... playing... etc.

Quite possibly those will be the best years of your life. You can dream, experiment, see what does or doesn't work for you and have time to change the direction you are heading. Ask questions of others as well as your self. Good decisions at that stage could well determine how easy or hard life will be later.
Learn how to interact with others. Apply yourself to what you are doing, AND, have some fun!

I wish I had grown up in a different era than when MacMillan owned Conn, because it took me years to overcome the disdain of the low quality instruments produced in this era, and many of the older Conn instruments were beat to death and not considered worth repairing at that time, so that it was decades before I had the pleasure of playing a good quality Conn instrument, including the Cavalier souzy I have custody of (predecessor to the 14K).

Avoid the temptations of loose women and strong drink.
Middle School, High School and College band are among my most cherished memories, only to be cut short by my lack of fortitude...

Don’t listen to him!

Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

Agreed. Earplugs are a must. Bands can get loud. Especially if you are sitting in the middle of one.jerseyeuph wrote:Protect your hearing.
If you want to play brass in groups the rest of your life, from community orchestra to amateur concert band to any number of professional settings, as well as the tuba, learn to play the slide trombone. You could branch off into other brass instruments from that base.
If you know how to mash buttons *and* work a slide, you will have many more chances to be a part of groups the rest of your life.

The same advice (tempered for the ears of the age of the audience) is what, as a Scout leader, we all gave to our Scouts to keep them focused on completing their ranks and merit badges, especially Eagle. Every time we lost a boy, we commented, "Well, we lost him to the fumes," meaning gasoline fumes and perfumes.Three Valves wrote:Avoid the temptations of loose women and strong drink.

Honestly wish I would have known how to hustle like I do now.
Buying my first tuba I got lucky with the price but never would have been able to afford it if I hadn't had some help.
Something a college professor talked to me about was the number of hours in the week.
There are 168, There's a lot you can do in a week and if you hustle you can lead a happy social life, fulfilled musical life and pack away the savings efficiently for when you need them(tuba related or just lifewise)

Seems to me that you put loose women in a different category than loose men. They are not.Three Valves wrote:Avoid the temptations of loose women and strong drink.
