The bit about Marin Alsop getting the MD spot for Baltimore (and the musicians not liking it) has been one of the headline stories on the BBC World Service all day. I've not seen a peep of it on domestic news. Strange (or sad) isn't it?

Bloke, I'm not sure political bent has anything to do with racism or sexism. When I read the article, it never even remotely crossed my mind that gender might be an issue to ANYONE, and I'm about as far right as they get.

It's been my observation that race and sex bias is pretty evenly distributed across the political spectrum, in pools that are rapidly shrinking, thank goodness.

No news article that I've read so far (not even the one in our local fishwrapper) mentions that she was MD here in Eugene between 1989-96, which isn't exactly "here today, gone tomorrow".

Living in Baltimore, I know a couple of BSO members (apart from Fedderly). From what I've heard, there were a lot of the musicians didn't particularly like Temirkanov, and are probably glad that he is leaving. So, I can understand why there's some nervousness about the next person in line for the job. Maybe they could have benefitted from a longer search? Who knows.

I just hope the BSO can do something about the ~$12 million in debt they face...
