Hi
Just wondering when and how Xmas became shorthand for Christmas?

I always figured it started with the Looney Tunes cartoons (always getting the package marked "Do not open 'til X-mas"). My guess was that the animators couldn't write small enough to clearly put the whole word on the tag, so they shortened it, and then luckily noticed the relationship to the original Greek.
