Parents who check their child out of school during a tornado and hail storm.

Happened Tuesday afternoon, while my 7th and 8th grade band students were tucked neatly in their hiding places when a tornado came within 4 miles of my school.

I was evil and refused to let the child leave my class until the adult drove around to my building and drove their vehicle as close to the band room door as possible. Did I mention that there was golf ball size hail falling from the skies as this was happening?

Go figure....................

Flying elephants. You know they're not going to drop it in some open field. It's ever so much fun for them to bomb somebody with it.

High school and college players blasting every orchestral excerpt that they don't know how to play in a conference exhibit room.

Brass players that think that louder is always better.

Trombonists not lowering their Maj. 3rd.

Salesmen who won't take no for an answer.

Name dropping.

Those conservatory/university music students who are learning of musical history, theory, performance practice, literature, etc. for the first time and act and talk as if they are an authority and that you couldn't have possibly heard of all this before because after all, you aren't in school now.

Feet shuffling to show appreciation for peers' playing. For those who do, you should know that they don't do that in the big leagues.

For sale ads with photos that do not show a basic front and back view of the entire length of a tuba. Weird angles, extreme close-ups, and chiaroscuro lighting are fine for coffee table books, but not ads.

-Empy ice trays in the freezer!
-People who do not completely turn off their phones in the concert. Thanks for turning off the ringer, but do you have to stare at your illuminated phone during the concert every three minutes to see if you received a voice or text message?
-People who ask you if they can ask you a question
-Inviting someone to come over at 7pm and they show at 630 wtf
- People who put the change on top of the bill so it's all sliding around when you're trying to bring it in with your hands full and 10 people watching.....yeah it's not my fault!!
-When people call me "chief" or "slugger" or "boss" or "big guy" when i'm NONE of those things, i'm not your sergent, i'm not your boss, I don't know you
-When i have to go to a store (i'd rather not, but who has a choice?) I hate listening to dreadful "singing" and miserable, monotonous rhythms. "Popular" singers are torture to me, but it's too much to ask to buy my products in peace i guess
-People pumping gas who need to land precisely on $10 and stop at about $9 and creep up to 10 one little squeze at a time therefore making my pump fluctuate as well! I hate that
-It especially annoys me when racists are accused of "discrimination". The ability to discriminate is a precious faculty; by judging all members of one race to be the same, the racist precisely shows himself incapable of discrimination

Quite true. Is a racist defined as someone who must judge ALL members of a race to be the same? Could a racist be someone who makes observations of certain TENDENCIES that the respective races seem to have? If one says yes to the latter, than I am a racist. If one says yes to the former, than I am not a racist.

By the way, which is it-there are definite, distinctive races; or there is a myth of the concept of race? Books are continually written claiming both.

The same could be said for me, as well.

Selective racism? Racist unless a specific person suits one's particular tastes?
Please explain further.

A belief that people of a particular race have an inherent quality is racist. Well, I guess that saying "African Americans have darker colored skin than Caucasians" isn't necessarily racist. But remember comments about inherent athletic ability, 'endowment', intelligence? Why judge a group based on "tendancies"? That's discriminatory of itself. A racist could certainly be capable of discrimination, it's actually an inherent part.
Being non-discriminatory would mean not making a judgment about a GROUP of people overall; judging individuals is not racist, could be considered discriminatory (eg "I don't like people with tattoos.")

It's a tough call. It's also something that world society today needs to deal with more thoroughly. IMO.

1. A relative comes in from out of town and you take them out to dinner.
2. They order the most expensive steak on the menu (forgivable, but see 3 and 4.)
3. They order it very well done.
4. After it arrives, they cover it with ketchup. ketchup.

My shoe would have tasted the same very well done and smothered in ketchup  and would have cost me a whole lot less.

Code: Select all

But remember comments about inherent athletic ability, 'endowment', intelligence? Why judge a group based on "tendancies"?
Yes, I believe there are certain inherent strengths and weaknesses of the respective races. To not believe this is to tell yourself that what can be observed through the scientific method is incorrect. Are you aware that people of African ancestry have more tendonous muscle mass, which aids in more explosive speed? Are you aware that Asians are stronger in the fields of Mathematics and Science(nonverbal phenomena) than other races? Are you saying that Herrnstein and Murray's Bell Curve is hogwash? Here are the main claims of it:

Intelligence exists and is accurately measurable across racial, language, and national boundaries.
Intelligence is one, if not the most, important correlative factor in economic, social, and overall success in America, and is becoming more important.
Intelligence is largely (40% to 80%) genetically heritable.
No one has so far been able to manipulate IQ long term to any significant degree through changes in environmental factors - except for child adoption - and in light of their failure such approaches are becoming less promising.
The USA has been in denial regarding these facts, and in light of these findings a better public understanding of the nature of intelligence and its social correlates is necessary to guide future policy decisions in America.

Why judge a group based on tendencies? I was merely arguing that there are empirically observable tendencies that the respective races have.

This is a bunch of sh!t that has been OVER-dealt with SO much by "society" that people actually have made a g-d profession of discussing it (and out of stirring others up over it).
Amen.

When I used to work in restaurants it would always bug the crap out of me when someone would order a filet mignon well-done and butterflied. I was always thinking 'Hey moron, why don't you just order a hambuger'. It's cheaper and probably tastes better when its been cooked to within an inch of its life.

I'm totally with you there. Then again, why didn't you just serve them hamburger? With all the ketchup they'd put on it, how'd they know? :P

What always bugs me is when you go somewhere and they ask you to pick the lobster you're going to have. Not only do YOU have to sentence the poor creature to death, but you certainly don't want to develop a relationship with it, however brief.

It would help if they would put a notice prominently over the tank "These lobsters are certified mass murderers, rapists, and child molesters" :D
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?
