Re: Update Update
Update:
My $1500 Troy-Bilt Storm Tracker Mother of All Snowblowers will average about 1 foot per minute in making headway against 30 inches of snow across a 10-foot-wide driveway.
That includes the time required to replace the tracks when they derail, which I had to do about 6 or 8 times.
Sub-Update: The above instances proved that Craftsman ratchet handles will still work when encrusted with snow.
Meta-Update: The above average was determined over 1200 feet of driveway.

Linear. I think I moved about 1200 cubic yards of snow. Uncompressed, that's 60 large dump trucks. Of course, it is compressed when plowed, but then it becomes ice and is even harder (so to speak) to handle.tbn.al wrote:Square or linear?Rick Denney wrote:Update:

Re: Update Update
With 30" of snow, the only trucks that can make headway are the 12-yard dump trucks with two rear axles and the sort of plow that throws the snow up over the edge. On my gravel driveway? No, thanks, even assuming I could find somebody thus equipped available to plow my driveway.bloke wrote:Things work a bit differently in "the south".
(Though 1500 feet off the highway) hearing the weird scraping noise of the retrofitted snow plow truck about a mile or two away, one rushes down to the road though the (here - only about a foot deep) snow, flags down the driver, hands him $20, and has him make a slight "detour" in his plowing route (while riding "shotgun" next to him back up to the house).
And if you try to run in 30 inches of snow, I hope you are agile.

Yup. Completely competent greasy fast-foot burger at Five Guys. I hope their current rapid expansion doesn't ruin them.bloke wrote:Is that the place that offers roasted peanuts while you're waiting for your order?the elephant wrote:UPDATE:

Yep---great peanuts, very over-priced hamburgers. They're good, but not better than I get at the local diner, and cheaper by a lot.bloke wrote:Is that the place that offers roasted peanuts while you're waiting for your order?the elephant wrote:UPDATE:

Re: Update Update
Today, I steered the Mother of All Snowblowers out into the fresh 12-15" we got in yesterday's blizzard. It made it about 200 feet in a single pass (it takes six passes to clear the driveway when the snow is low enough to do it that way), and then the drive transmission shot craps. I knew it was bad when I removed the lower panel and one of the spider gears on the left differential fell out. The differential frame was pretzeled.tbn.al wrote:I am impressed! So, we hand-shoveled about 400 feet of driveway today, the Redhead and I. Our neighbor came to our rescue this time, and used his front-end loader to take care of the other 800 feet or so out to the road.
So, we moved 185 cubic yards of heavy, wet snow the old-fashioned way: with snow shovels.
Was that harder than moving 1200 cy of snow with a blower? You betcha.
But I will be at work tomorrow: My last day.
