Someone moved one of my tubas without my permission between my lesson yesterday afternoon and noon today. I am extremely mad about that, especially because they picked it up by the main tuning slide (and on any other horn, that would have fallen, and the bell would have gotten crushed)

You left your tuba, outside its case, whether strangers could mess with it for a whole day?

It was in its spot behind a curtain in the tuba studio. We've moved each others instruments before, but never that irresponsibly.
Also, the Martin doesn't have a case. The 20"+ bell (and being in college) makes that tough

Ditto with the Prius yesterday, for several hours during one of the rainfall peaks, from Nashville to Franklin TN and back. Although, admittedly I did not do quite as much off-roading as Joe did (that time.) Many supposedly more "capable" vehicles were pulled over to the side of the road or sheltered under bridges.

The Reynolds Dr. Young mouthpiece looks just like a giant French horn mouthpiece. What you have would be much newer, as the ones I am speaking of are pretty old (1970s) and are twice the length of a normal tuba mouthpiece (again, being a scaled-up copy of a French horn mouthpiece, about 6" in length or more, IIRC).

Wade, the Reynolds Dr. Young isn't much like any of the mouthpieces I've seen that were made by Dr. Young his-own-self. Those were never as long, and the cups on them are almost normal. But there is no taper from the throat to the backbore, per Dr. Young's design philosophy. Ian's is typical of the ones I have seen, except that it's all metal, and many I've seen were acrylic on the rim half of the cup.

Life is about to get a lot more uncomplicated. Today is moving day. Our daughter, son-in-law, 2 granddaughters and one "big dog" have been living with us for 3 weeks while their "new to them" home is being readied for occupancy. I know they are anxious to get on with their lives but it is bittersweet for us. We've had a wonderful three weeks, but now I can practice late at night again. You have been updated.

April 11, 2010 was my 17th anniversary. However, I've still got another 8 years to go to match the 25 years I smoked. You got smart a lot quicker than I did.

The latest update in my life? My wife and I have returned from Baltimore Maryland and the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival. She did quite well. But it was a bit of a weather shock for us. We went from the heat and fetid humidity of Baltimore 90/90 to temperatures in the thirties and snow as we approached home. But I did make a pilgrimage to Baltimore Brass Company. I had a chance to see some nice tubas; I bought a Perantucci mouthpiece #84, that I can't wait to try out; and I got to use it on a Hirshbrunner and a King. I preferred the sound of the King - nice and bright with a easy to reach high range. I will have to return again to Baltimore Brass.

The spring concert is now done and went very well. The new high school "drum line" was well received at their debut and the folks say they are very excited to see the drum line in the local parade next month after not having a band in the parade in the last 20 or so years. The students learned a lot on rhythm reinforcement and are having a blast learning ot march with the drums.

2 more weeks and I head south to Colorado for a much neded vacation and to move mom from Colo to ND.

I can't stand people who constantly belittle themselves or their abilities in a ridiculously obvious ploy to generate pity. It's really terribly unattractive.
