Not really. That was the day I was able to finally get licensed. I have tried on several occasions to learn code, and I'm still working on it. But life has never given me enough time to really pursue it. When the requirement was dropped, I and many others were able to join a hobby that was dying anyway (and probably still is, but not for that reason).eupher61 wrote:realizing that code is no longer required for a ham. (no, I'm not licensed, but my dad had been listed since 1933, and my brother K0GYK since 1960 or so.)
(Last night's project was shunting a bit of the audio signal going into the two op-amps that drive the speaker-level audio outputs on my Ten Tec Omni V transceiver. The objective--fulfilled--was to not have the audio driven to clipping by the time the AF knob was on 2. Later in the week, I'm redesigning the blown parasitic suppressor from one of the vacuum-tube anodes in my 600-watt RF amplifier. This is a good hobby for me and am active in it.)
That said, I can read about half of Bloke's message without cutting and pasting it into a Morse-code decoder, and someday that will improve. Now that I have my license, I'm more interested in code than I ever was before. CW is not on the way out. No need for sadness, even by CW fans.

I learned code on a Vic 20 and Commodore 64. I've forgotten exactly how it worked, but there was a programming trick where you could print something to the screen (or was it read something ??), then make a call, and it was like you had pressed enter ... or something like that. So I wrote a simple BASIC program that would generate random alpha-numeric characters and play the beeps corresponding to the character. It printed the character to the screen in the same color as the background so that you could not see it. Then waited for you to press the key. If you pressed the wrong key, it would send it again. This worked well for learning the characters. At some point, it hits its limit as a way to learn because you can never have more than one character queued up in your brain.
Later, when the IBM PC took over, along came Super Morse which did about the same thing, plus a lot more.
Nothing beats getting on the air and conversing in code for learning it.
Alas, it has been at least 10 years since I was last on HF.

Think about it.
Did Steve Fossett have annual checkups? Probably.
Good behavior? As far as we know.
Fingerings? His kazoo playing was impeccable.
Whisky and Peanut M&Ms? NO!!!
So, where is Steve Fossett now?
