Excellent, fantastic movie. It really conveyed the tortured souls that inhabit Batman and his world.
Don't expect Adam West, don't expect a rehash of those Schumacher gloss-fests (God, they sucked...). Burton started getting close with his second movie, especially DeVito's rendition of the Penguin.
Batman Begins helped get the story back on track, and
The Dark Knight took it to where the key Batman graphic novels of the late 1980's were leading ("Dark Knight Returns", "Arkham Asylum: A Serious House On Serious Earth", and "Batman: The Killing Joke").
July isn't done yet, and I say that this is my favorite movie of the year. Easily. Nothing's going to top this. This isn't just another superhero movie;
Iron Man was a rockin' superhero movie, but it's nothing compared to this. It should be considered for picture of the year, and unless there's another silly war romance chick flick to topple it, I think it would win.
Heath Ledger's Joker is scary. Other villains are just a little nutso, looking for stuff like money & power. The Joker just wants to break everything... and everybody. He's unnerving to such a degree that his little pocket knife seems sharper and more dangerous than the missiles from the Batmobile. His stories about himself (although I need to see it again to be sure about this..) are self-contradictory, making you feel that he really IS insane and wonder even more just what the heck he's going to do next. Put Heath up for an Oscar -- not simply out of respect over his passing, but because he was so damn good.
Watching Harvey Dent's decline into madness is depressing -- as it
should be. You really want to root for the guy while he's still in one piece. Then, to see him crack, you KNOW he's gone -- he can't be reached, he can't be brought back to civilization. Harvey Dent is dead. Two-Face, I'll bet, will be back somehow, even as only a resident of Arkham.
One of the members of another forum I frequent posted this after he got back from seeing it:

No longer.
The dark knight, in my HUMBLE opinion, is the best movie of 2008, the best super hero movie of all time, and one of the best movies in the history of movies. Never have I experienced a cinematic experience such as this one, and I highly doubt I will ever again.
Heath will win an oscar, or the entire award ceremony is a sham. TDK will win best picture of the year, or the show is rigged. This movie will break the best weekend opening set by that horrible POS called spiderman 3, or else there is no justice in this world.
Let me say this once, you must see this movie.
Unless you are under the age of 12, homosexual, or a woman (i kid), there is no excuse for not seeing this movie. This film should be required viewing for any sort of film class, to show future filmmakers how a movie is supposed to be made.
The hype is real, the reviews should be duly noted, and anyone who bad mouths this movie by nitpicking on batman's voice or scarecrows trite cameo is a total and absolute idiot. There is no justification for disliking this movie (saying its too dark is like saying summer is too warm).
This movie will kick your ***. The tools and tricks batman employs are original and stunning. The batpod, is probably the coolest vehicle ever shown on film. The acting is top notch, nothing out of the ordinary for the all star cast that Nolan has put together. Maggie > Katie.
Its hard to believe this film is pg-13; the joker is terrifying, yet also funny, and is more than a match for batman. The stuff this guy pulls, the dialogue he has with his victims..all of it will leave a scarring imprint on your mind. Never has a title been more appropriate for a film.
I had high expectations from this movie; I've been keeping up with most of the updates, and knew it was going to be good. However, it has shattered every pre-concieved notion of what I thought was going to be a really good film.
