Thanks LJV! Power out until the weekend maybe...and subway out for who know how long. We are in the east river, I hear those tunnels got real messed up.

Re: Hurricane...
Seeing images of the Jersey Shore on the news (when at my parents house, who have power) is heartbreaking. Many happy memories from my youth on the Boardwalk at Seaside Heights, which is basically gone. Next to nothing left.
Very, very thankful that I only have a loss of power to deal with. Once the lights come back on, and we restock the fridge, life is back to normal. Not so for those down the shore.

Just got out of midtown, no power there for a but it seems. Battery Park lights are on- and I have Internet. No cell, but glad to be connected again. That, and able to shave and have hot showers. Good luck Brett!

My memories are of Asbury Park in the early to mid 80's. unfortunately, that has also been basically gone for over ten years, and has had nothing to do with any weather events.TMurphy wrote:Seeing images of the Jersey Shore on the news (when at my parents house, who have power) is heartbreaking. It was a hurricane, Joe... we're not animals!bloke wrote:Has the mayor temporarily suspended the "large sugary drink" law ?

Quick update from me -- still no power, but the Subway is open again and I can get out to Starbucks for some free charging and Internet. Maybe power will be back tomorrow? My building does have backup power generators, so there are lights in the hallway and lobby, so it's not totally dark. Oh well!

Re: Hurricane...
My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in the northeast suffering from the aftermaths of "Superstorm-Sandy". As a kid up to age 11 or 12, I remember my folks taking me to to Seaside Heights, Asbury Park and to Point Pleasant Beach (we lived in Morristown, NJ then). That was 55 years ago, but I still remember a lot of fun times. The pictures of the damage in NY, NJ and other areas are relly troubling. The worst of all is the loss of life of course. I wish all there the best.

Re: Hurricane...
We seem to have been largely spared here in Delaware (power out a few hours, but nothing bad), but have relatives with a house on Long Beach Island, Jersey... don't know when they'll get to even see it!
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

I don't really see the point in "comparing" natural disasters with one another.tooba wrote:In some ways this storm seems to have been as bad - possibly even worse - than Katrina

Re: Hurricane...
Mentioning Sandy and Katrina in the same sentence is, in my opinion, a bit disrespectful to all those who suffered through Katrina.
For most of us here in NJ, the worst we encountered was a power outage (my power came on around midnight or so Wednesday night/Thursday morning). Folks are having a hard time getting fuel for their vehicles/generators, though the ports have been reopened to ships carrying fuel. For most of us, things are either back to normal, or will be back to normal in the next few days, maybe a week.
The devestation of the Jersey shore, along with parts of Long Island, and Queens, is where things will not be fixed for a long time. Many communities are essentially wiped out. It's tragic. Still, nothing compared to what happened to the Gulf coast in Katrina, especially in the most important statistic: loss of life.
However, if a storm the size and strength of Katrina ever made landfall here?? I can't even begin to imagine the carnage that would cause.
