Awesome! With whom are you studying? What have you found helpful here on the bboard? I'm sure the majority of TubeNetters are students. I didn't discover the forum until after school, but if I had, I'd have had much more insight when I could've used it.k001k47 wrote:I am a student.

Re: Who's with me?
You halfway expect that on a sports BBS, because people go there for that. Are people coming here for that, too? I think so, unfortunately.phaymore wrote:In fact, TubeNet is quite tame compared to most sites. I like to read college football BBS and the majority of post start out innocent enough but quickly turn into personal attacks. Most then get moved to the "smack board." I halfway expect that on a sports message board, but it is sad to see it on that site that caters to what I thought were mature adults and professionals.
You'd think Tubenet would cater to those who are interested in the tuba, and you'd think on the whole tuba players would not be greatly different than other musicians. But from my impression of BBS setups around other musical instruments, I'd be surprised if there are any others that are quite as ripe as Tubenet.
Toobist's notion that we could each address it, by speaking up on the BS and hopefully puncturing the illusion that a few mean spirited individuals speak for everyone, might work. Or not. The problems I see with it are 1) the habitual offenders enjoy this kind of thing and are skilled at it, so you have to work a lot harder to stick with your message than many of us are ready to, and 2) after years of this climate, you can't assume that the seats are filled with people who don't like it. I guess the alternative is a major, long term, focused effort by real moderators. I guess you can't expect a lot there, but to be fair, haven't things have been improving a little in places, in recent years? Maybe it just takes time.

I've learned to take things read on the internet with a grain of salt. Also, I don't feel comfortable disclosing where I study. Dont nkow whyToobist wrote:Awesome! With whom are you studying? Re: Who's with me?
I gladly pay about $100 a year to be part of a premium sports board where the dialogue is invariably intelligent and civil. Partly that's because those values are the reason the posters are there instead of somewhere else, partly it's because of the pay wall, and partly it's because those values are enforced by the mods. Those who don't post in accord with those values don't last long. They are banned and their money is refunded. That model works, and I would purely love to have a tuba board like it.Donn wrote:You halfway expect that on a sports BBS, because people go there for that. Are people coming here for that, too? Re: Who's with me?
I think part of the problem started with the professional labels. That got worse when band directors, instrument salesmen, and grad students started getting that label, then worse again when all those guys started asking for copies of music...

Re: Who's with me?
I would like to see people start new threads when they take the thread in an unrelated direction. When this doesn't happen, it would helpful to "clean" the thread of the unrelated responses to the OP. I post in an automotive forum where things get scrapped as they appear (don't ask me how I know)

Re: Who's with me?
The problem here is that the first people to try that strategy are the ones who are the problem on the public board to begin with. Those who have proven themselves to be south ends of northbound horses are already on the list of those who can't send me a PM (the "enemies" list in the User Control Panel) so there is an easy way to keep out of idiots' woodsheds.swillafew wrote:

Re: Who's with me?
I wondered about the friend or foe thing, I didn't know what those words meant here. I started playing back when tuba players were much too relaxed to snipe at each other. This board is nowhere near as bad as the comments on "Yahoo", but as tuba players, we could all take a big chill pill get back to having a sense of humor.

Re: Who's with me?
Thanks for that Joe. Seriously. No sarcasm this time. I needed that (especially the octoberfest pic! I've missed those!). My language gets a little flowery when I'm on my soapbox. You are actually one of the people I was talking about - the sort of member I tend to click on because I always want to see how you might chime in.bloke wrote:tack...??Toobist wrote:That's the tack you've chosen? I get it. My tone is coming off as snooty. Please disregard any apparent douchebaggery on my part and accept my apologies...
Joe, should I just give it a rest? I probably should've kept my gob shut to start. What's your opinion on how we should view this forum and do you think it even needs discussion? Am I asking too much? There are great points above regarding how other boards are viewed and about how trying to moderate a board to any higher degree is next to impossible.
Don's post above, especially, is insightful. Thanks Don.
I'm trying to get a discussion going... If it turns out I should just let it go, I guess I'll have to. I would love to see a little more of the sense of community I used to see just a few years back is all.
Gonna sleep on it myself.
Night all.

Re: Who's with me?

Welcome, new comers. The tradition of TubeNet Festivus begins with the airing of grievances.
I got a lot of problems with you people! And now you're gonna hear about it!

I think of tubenet as a resource.i think you can find what you're looking for here.it,like life, can be messy, but on the whole,is an overwhelmingly positive experience. Thanks Sean and Schlep for going to the trouble!

Re: Who's with me?
The thing is, Tubenet in particular has a reputation, and has earned it. Sure, the best people are the busiest, we're all human, moderators have real jobs - like any other BBS. For whatever reason, this one is not like the others. The unproven premise here is that it makes a difference - that good people stay away from Tubenet like you stay away from downtown Memphis.

Re: Who's with me?
Was this a side note, or is this in connection with who shows up here - some of them are too busy, and the rest are too elitist and boasting of their positions, so good riddance?bloke wrote:In the first half of the 20th century, there were - perhaps - a handful or two of struggling tuba players who supplemented their income with part-time conservatory teaching. Today, there are hundreds-and-hundreds of full-time gov't-employed 'fessers' with 'positions'. Curiously enough, the busiest and most productive of them seem to be the least elitist and the least boasting of their positions.
My father had a rhetorical technique of enlisting his dog's support for his position, because the dog seemed agreeable and couldn't argue anyway. The very late Bill Bell seems to be in the same position.

I normally accept TubeNet as it is. I don't believe it is worth my time or effort to change large groups of people, that for the most part I do not know. You can recognize the jerks on TubeNet fairly quickly and chose to ignore them or "foe" them.
I do find it disappointing that this board is R rated. Young tuba players should not be referred to this site.

While I agree that there is some content here that is inappropriate for some audiences or places, I would hardly call it R-rated. Sorry kids, no cleavage or petty adult arguing until you're 17.Mark wrote:I do find it disappointing that this board is R rated. Young tuba players should not be referred to this site.
