So ... assuming it doesn't normally go that way, what tuba has been winning the auditions? I infer from your proposal that this could be a valid question.

I don't know nothing about today's top of the line tubas myself, but the initial proposition reminds me a little of saxophone mouthpieces. I've been looking at tenor saxophone mouthpieces lately. I dare say saxophone mouthpieces make more difference than is the case in the tuba world, in the sense that the tonal potential can vary quite radically. The market is something like cheap student $20-$50, serious production $90-$300, boutique & custom $300-$600 and up. That's for plastic/hard rubber, add more for a metal mouthpiece. There doesn't seem to be a strong correlation between quality/consistency and price - a Selmer Brilhart Ebolin at $40 is much more reliable than a Berg Larsen at $180. So what do you get, for $500? Bear in mind, it's a tenor saxophone, usually to play in a loud band, in a club with people yelling at the top of their lungs to make themselves heard over the band and each other. What I think people hear in these mouthpieces, they alone hear.

That doesn't mean it's a bad thing, though. If you play your horn and it sounds like what you want to hear, in your head, that's got to help you play like you want to play. That might apply to tubas, too. Probably one reason the sousaphone isn't prized so much.

I guess I should have overplayed the whole "downgrade" intent a little more tounge-in-cheek.

Chuck"cheeky"Jackson

P.S.- I have played far more out of tune tubas than out of tune sousaphones. maybe less is more and a sousaphone should be the ultimate downgrade, or upgrade if you will.

A few weeks ago I put down fertilizer that was supposed to feed the grass and kill the dandelions.
Most of my grass is now dead and I still have plenty of dandelions.
I am not getting the cheap stuff next year.

You have been downgraded.

Grass is barely green, trees have no leaves, and it's been over 70 degrees maybe twice... and my allergies have already incapacitated me. It's people like me who keep Claritin in business. :)

Most of the stuff here has been moved out of the greenhouse to poolside. We lost a few things over the Winter including Mexican Heather that has thrived in three window boxes that are always put in the greenhouse over the Winter. They have always survived sitting on the floor but the weeks of hard freeze got 'em this year. Too bad. Those window boxes have survived well over fifteen years.

We used to have a wonderful aroma coming from a Gardenia hedge in the back of our house. Alas, after the freeze, no more Gardenia odors wafting about. Sad.

Ooh, Paul Chambers, a.k.a. "PC" to bass players.

I have been whacking dandelions, gosmores, etc. with a half size pick-axe - I'm sure there are better tools specifically for this job, but this is kind of a fun one. The object being to dig up the deep taproot. Maybe better than trying to poison them, which if it doesn't (see above) have the intended consequences, is sure to have unintended consequences.

What I would dearly love to see downgraded is these carpenter bees. I get immense satisfaction from hitting them with a badminton racket but I can't reach the high ones. I am thinking about a little air powered anti-aircraft weapon. Anyone tried it?

So, if you can't get a job as a murderous tyrant, you start a day to honor the planet we live on? Or does it work the other way 'round? You start Earth Day and work up to murderous tyrant?

I once got turned down by the World Bank when I asked to borrow a country.

I guess murderous tyrants don't usually ask nicely.

I suppose, if you're just a lieutenant, you can work your way up to "murderous tyrant", as did this one:

...and all the time, they are downgrading you.

They make .22 caliber shotshells. When used from rifled barrels (revolvers or rifles), they have a terribly wide pattern. But Savage used to make a "garden gun", which is a .22 caliber shotgun with a straight barrel, with a good pattern. With that, you could probably kill a carpenter bee from 10 feet distance. But beware, legally that would still be "discharging a firearm", and your local city might have rules against that.

In that case: they also make shot shells for air guns.

Bloke will chime in about getting rid of carpenter bees. He's an expert at it!

I've noticed a few of them buzzing around my community band's parade trailer since it's warmed up. The trailer has a solid 2 x 8 plank floor of treated lumber but they still bore into it. The problem is that the only way I can get at them is to jack the trailer up and crawl under it. I ain't 18 years old and 180 pounds any more!
