The weather in NYC is beautiful today. Clear and sunny, 74 degrees right now. Just walked my dog along the East River, which was shimmering brightly in the sunlight.

I did stumble on a new sign by the water, a not-so-subtle reminder that this water is nothing more than a highly polluted shipping channel.
rsz_30813101314-00.jpg
A reminder that I don't want even 1 drop of that water to touch my skin. I'm not sure if the water here is better, worse, or the same as Baltimore Harbor, which I have also lived adjacent to. But one day, I would like to live somewhere on or near water that I don't need to be afraid to touch.

But...the weather is beautiful today. :)

True. But I guess I'm kind of selective about the things that don't kill me.

Today marks the 12th year I have lived in Las Vegas (moved here on 8/17/98). It is the longest I have ever lived in one place my entire life. Gives me pause. While here I have turned 40 and recently 50, have become a fitness nut, stopped playing the tuba due to FD, found I LOVED teaching high school kids, have been at the helm of a FANTASTIC youth orchestra for 5 years, and have come to love a place many people only know about through the media. No, we don't all live in casinos, the schools are better than the media portrays them, the heat is dry, I regularly wear shorts on Christmas Day, enjoy year-round gardening, have learned how to do all major and minor work to an inground sprinkler system, and have always been in awe of how blue the sky is here.

Point: You NEVER know where life is going to lead you. Keep an open mind, a child's sense of wonder, and a good sense of humor.

The world's largest retail chain is teaming up with Ernest & Julio Gallo Winery of California to produce the spirits at an affordable price, in the $2-$5 range. Wine connoisseurs may not be inclined to put a bottle of Wal-Mart brand into their shopping carts, but "there is a market for budget wine," said Kathy Micken, professor of marketing at the University of Arkansas. "But the right name is important." Customer surveys were conducted to determine the most attractive name for the Wal-Mart wine brand. The top surveyed names in order of popularity were:

10. Chateau Traileur Parc
9. White Trashfindel
8. Big Red Gulp
7. World Championship Riesling
6. NASCARbernet
5. Chef Boyardeaux

I hit my first golfer. 1st tee, driver, pushed it to the right and there was a guy looking for his ball in the trees coming up the fairway one over from me. He went down, but he got up and kept playing. I'm not sure if he was just messing with me or it actually hit him. He wasn't mad or laughing, so it's hard to tell. His wife didn't seem too concerned and his next shot was pretty good.....and he finished his round.

A few years back a old Arkansas friend(insurance agent as well) related this story. Guy goes golfing. Guy has a few beers. Guy gets frustrated with the slow play of a couple of old ladies who ignored his pleas to play through. Guy takes bet from cart partner that he can't hit it far enough to hit the ladies. Lady goes to hospital. Guy's insurance agent, my friend, can't believe the $50,000 claim check. It seems the lady's son was a personal injury lawyer.
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

Actually, I was golfing with my wife as well. When your wife golfs, she'll never complain about how much you spend on golf.

True story: three weeks ago, I played a wedding. We played Canon in D. One of the hardest things I've ever had to play on tuba...but the slow tempo droning in my head for weeks of practice gave me the best swing tempo I've ever had and I shot my best game ever during that period.

Played with Alte Kamaraden at the city park in Cody, Wyoming, Friday evening. Afterwards had a fine meal at Terry's home - the other tuba player who is much better than me. Today, Sunday we played at the dedication of the park in Fishtail, Montana. Again plenty of food and beer. I had a great time playing.
Beginning again to be a tuba player.

As of 6:54 yesterday I am now a Grandfather. I guess I can now officially join the ranks of the old. I don't have a photo hosting site, but here's a link to my new grandson.

Now how much nicer is that than bein' downtown and having to think about using your rod for self-defense...

My dog hates helicopters. She barks at them all day long, and runs to the windows to watch them fly away. Closing the blinds only made her confused about what she's barking at. Unfortunately, I live on the East River, which is a direct flight path for dozens of helicopters every day. Lord help me if one ever hovers nearby...

Yet, she's not afraid of the tuba at all... go figure... :)
