Fohrenburger Kellerbier here.
I can see the brewery from my kitchen window.

They have special glasses, too (at least I havenÂ´t seen this anywhere else): A unicorn (their logo) is etched into the ground of the glass. This causes bubbles to form on the rough surface, so a constant column of bubbles will rise no matter how long it takes to drain the glass. Some people drop a grain of rice into their beer for the same reason.

When IÂ´m visiting my folks in Essen, I make sure I get some Stauder Pils, Diebels Alt, and Borbecker Dampfbier. Delicious!!

Don't know if you can get it anywhere else, but I have recently become extremely fond of Wachusett Quinn's Amber Ale from Wachusett Brewery in Westminster, MA. (I think that's right) Good stuff.

Last time I ate at Scholz's, bratwurst was not on the menu. But the chicken-fried steak was excellent.

Of course, that was 15 years ago, when Larry Bales was in charge of the food concession.

Last I ate there (1996, during the retirement party of my old TxDOT boss, who was as German as a Huttl tuba), the food concession at Scholz's was leased to Threadgills. The Austin Sangerrunde Assocation, who owns Scholz's, always leased out the food concession.

Maybe things had changed, maybe my memory is just foggy; my experience with Scholz's all dates back prior to 1985, though. And to be perfectly honest, WHATEVER the food was, the beer was always the main event.

When you were there, was the little old guy whose picture is painted on the bathroom door still around?

Not when I frequented the place, most heavily during the middle 80's.

The stuff that Larry sent out to us in pitchers (most as encouragement to the crowd to continue to do so) was definitely not at the top rung of the beer hierarchy. But we didn't care.

I see they have German food on the menu now, but then now it's a little more touristy than it was before. When Larry ran the concession, it was plain Texas fare, beer, cigarette smoke, and flourescent lights. I miss it.

Maybe Steve Harsch will chime in. He's probably been there since I was.

Yuengling Lager. they also make a great Black & Tan and they have great pictures of dogs playing cards and drinking beer (yuengling of course), classic art!!!

Westvleteren, made by monks in a Trappist abbey in Belgium. Ratebeer has listed it as the world's best beer, and it's definitely way up there IMHO. Hard to find, as the monks only brew enough to financially support their abbey, and it can only be purchased at the abbey shop on certain days, and NO more than five crates per customer.

I'm afraid it's no longer five crates. The demand is so high, that they're down to one or two..... I've not bothered going there anymore since ratebeer listed it number one. They sometimes have a 3 mile queue on the country roads to the monastery since that.

Some time before that I'd already spent 2 hours waiting in line for my 5 crates on some occasions, and waiting 3 hours for 1 or 2 crates is something I'd only do if I really had too much time to spend. There's more than 1,000 other Belgian beer I'd like to try

Yesterday a local late night show had Michael Jackson (the old British one with the grey beard) as a guest. They had a bottle of Westvleteren 12 for him. Apparently they only could find one (1) bottle in the whole of Brussels and it cost 25 euro or about $30.
