Sorry to hear that, bloke.
One thing I can honestly say, no matter how inattentive the violas were, I never ended up in the ER with a concussion! (not that I shouldn't have...)

My son thinks cub scouts is the be-all, end-all, likes music, and plays his NASCAR and train games. He likes to go to the local minor league baseball and college basketball games with me or his grandparents, respectively, but doesn't care a whit about football or soccer. That's just fine with me.

I went to the eagles vs. giants game three weeks ago at the Meadowlands. (My in-laws have Giants season tix and thought my son and I would enjoy seeing the eagles, since they are sort of our home town team.) the tix were free so I went. I would never consider paying for tix to a game like this. I will not give any of my money to them. It kills me that a one hour game takes 3.5 hours to complete. All the stupid TV time outs are crazy.
The same goes for Hockey, ocassionally (very rarely) we go to the local AHL hockey team (reading Royals) and again, a one hour game takes three hours to play, longer if there are fights.
I went to a Phila. Soul Arena Football game a few years ago and the same thing a one hour game took over 3 hours and it mostly penalties. There were so many penalties that two drives were completely made from penalties! And these guys are supposed to be pros?
It is crazy and yet people will complain if the school concert lasts more than an hour and a half, (with no commercials i will add!)
I will also agree that many HS band half time shows are unbearably "artisitc". We do a "football" halftime show, geared directly to John Q. Public and everywhere we go people love us. We have done a Beatles show, TV show themes, Beach Boys, James Bond themes, you get the idea, music people can recognize and hum on the way home. and many people do not get up to go pee when we come on. I usually announce the show and its fun to hear people in the stands at the other schools say how much they like our show as i walk down the aisle after the performance. We play to our crowd and we generally can get what we want from our budget, within reason of course. Our Music Boosters do not have to buy our instruments, music, uniforms, etc. although that may change now that they passed a voter referendum in PA (Act 1). but again i will agree that much of our publicity is due to the football program, as much as I hate to admit it.

I assume your team sucked? In college, the entire band would stand on it feet and yell "PIE" when the clock would hit 3:14. Tooooooo many science major band geeks recognizing 3.14 as the "rounded" equivalent for the number Pi. Silly!
He probably would not have gotten hurt at all (or as badly) playing football. My son ended up with a @&$#*%! concussion in the ER from Rugby
Yeah, pads are for wusses. And people who care about having MOTOR FUNCTION STILL FUNCTIONING postgame.
I took a class one summer with a guy at my school who had gotten drafted in the 4th round for Jacksonville. A couple times that semester, he took me and some of the other guys out for wings and brews post class (I mean, he had the cash). Can't say I know of too many pro tuba players that would have done that. Hell, I can't even get guys in my section to pay me back on bets.
So are there jerks that play ball? Sure. But I know jerks that play tuba too. Don't hate the player, hate the game. But to hate football is just messed up.

This all reminds me of something Tommy Johnson told me when I was in high school (I took a summer's worth of lessons from him in 1974):
"Your chances of becoming a first-string NFL quarterback are better than getting a world-class tuba position, even if you are a world-class tuba player (and even if you can't play football!)"

Our friend, KingBaritoneGod, should be in good shape, though, becaue he has "world class sound". His teacher told him so....LoyalTubist wrote:This all reminds me of something Tommy Johnson told me when I was in high school (I took a summer's worth of lessons from him in 1974):
