I'm sure they have only the best intentions, but the way they conveyed it to me really burned.windshieldbug wrote:They're only trying to prepare you for what your future may be like...The Jackson wrote:Some music faculty over here have decided they know what is best for me and chastise me for practicing an instrument that they don't want me to be practicing when they know damn well that I will not drop my main instrument any time soon

Next day: another 1/4 to 1/2 inch of ice. Around 10:00 pm we had that unmistakable creak and crash in the back yard as we lost a tree. Fortunately, I had planned in advance a few years ago about the height of what the tree would grow to as a means of figuring out how far from the house to plant it. So it crashed harmlessly on the yard. Now, it's time to call my father in law with his chain saw, chop it up, and get him some firewood.
And this is even after I trimmed the dickens out of it to try to prevent this very thing from happening. Oh, well....

Welcome to the real world, where you find out that all that crap you were fed in college was just that... crap.Mojo workin' wrote:I knew this one was coming. What a privelege it must be to have the opportunity to be sick of the tuba. With all due respect to my vocation, I am sick of the tuba right now. Someone please come over to my house and remove all of the musical instruments for a few days; I need a mental break.
Here's my whine: Aquiring a Bachelor's and Master's degree in tuba, doing a year of GPD studies at a major conservatory, and realizing there is too damn much competition on the audition circuit, not enough private teaching to be had where I live, culminating in some occasional freelance playing, a handful of students, and a lovely day job building furniture and cabinetry where the seniormost workers get to determine what is played on the radio 8 hours per day(trust me, it's not Mahler,Wagner or Stravinsky).
Come visit!

Oh, KwitCher Bitchin, Guys.
Try it in a female world....all your problems plus we gotta put up with 50% of the population that "just doesn't get it" almost 100% of the time.
I mean, SHEESH. Like, tubas are designed to be played by 6X6 gorillas with lungs the size of KANSAS. Mouthpieces too, are designed for faces the size of TEXAS and big ole flobby rubber-lips. Why don't they design tubas so REAL PEOPLE can play them without needing a sherpa, a gol-darn bellows, and a wagon for the keg?

If there's enough beer to need a wagon for the keg, then it might be enough for the tuba players.MaryAnn wrote:Oh, KwitCher Bitchin, Guys.

What I hate is when I play an Oktoberfest gig and they serve Bud Light to the band. That stuff will corrode brass. Not to mention my pipes. We have to stop off on the way home and get decent beers to wash away the taste.

I'll whine a bit for my tuba buddy Chuck who doesn't visit Chisham much anymore and is definately not a whiner. As the principal tuba in the orchestra we both participate with, he has only one part all year. That's 5, count 'em, 5 concerts with only one stinkin' lousy part. And it was a lousy stinkin' part at that. Ravel Minuette Antique, which is about the worst piece of music he ever wrote. Why bother to join an orchestra and keep your chops up for one stinkin' lousy part a year. It's enough to make a trombone player cry.
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

Your ice storm even screwed me up royaly. My home office is in your town and they have been paralized for 2 days now basically putting me out of business as well.iiipopes wrote:I'm with the %^&* Winter guy. We just got 1/2 inch of solid ice that put the entire area out of commission, lost power for awhile, and we're due for another 1/2 inch overnight.

Ironically, the crap that I must tolerate in the real world surpasses the crap that I was fed and sold in college. Indeed, I wish someone had stopped me after my first performance degree, and pointed me in the direction of something marketable. You live and you learn.Welcome to the real world, where you find out that all that crap you were fed in college was just that... crap
Hey, roses gotta eat, too!
This is just the sort of hillbilly sh** that roses like me hear all day at work. It's OK, I've sent so many of you guys running with your tail between your legs, it's pathetic.
I've got your rose right here, buddy.
