What's the best way to have my First Act Contrabassoon shipped? I need it sent directly to my school's auditorium because I have a concert tomorrow afternoon. Will Grayhound deliver it backstage? I've heard that the best thing to do is put softballs down the bell to avoid crushing. Do I have to use NCAA-sanctioned softballs, or can I just use Superballs™? What if there's no bus station at my school? Do I have to use a box?

I'd say the best way to ship it is to fill the inside with that spray-in foam insulation, write the address on a piece of masking tape, stick it to the bell, and just cram the thing in a mailbox. It's all good. Oh- stamps. Use lots of stamps.

I just want to look in my town as I do not want to have to drive much. I cannot locate the Yazoo City Philharmonic in the phonebook, likewise the Yazoo City Symphony and the Yazoo City Radio Orchestra are sort of elusive. I am pretty sure we do not have an opera company, at least not one that uses live musicians.

I don't know. Maybe I should start small and enroll in the orchestra at the Yazoo City University. Anyone know how to contact them?

As far as rep I am thinking of really doing this up right. I want to play Kopprasch No. 1 followed by Blazhevich No. 1. Then, as a killer closer I would reprise Kopprasch No. 1 to reinforce my strong points to the committee. What do you all think of these choices? Too much? I could just to the Kopprasch twice
Bordogni #1. Definately. Only take it down 4 octaves.

Just watch out for that "brown" note...

Really Ele all you need for those auditions is the Rubank Intermediate book. How many notes do tuba players actually play in orchestra concerts anyway? Half the time you don't even have to be on the stage.
If you need a copy I have my old one from junior high school. It even has all the fingerings written in.

As for the kick stand, rather than zip ties, get it welded permanently to the instrument. This will add mass to the horn and really make it heavier. Also you may want to try heavy weight valve caps. They really make the instrument heavier. Years ago I remember guys used to put a leather strap around the bell. i guess that would make it easier to carry too since you are making it so heavy. and don't forget the heavy mouthpieces. Dollar for dollar, they really make the instrument the heaviest.

Use Hetman's.
Just keep a sharp eye out for buildup on the treadle.

Yes be sure to clean the treadle thoroughly before applying the Hetman's.

Why would you want to use Hetman's treadle? I hear it's in A. Why not an American standard CC?

Can someone tell me how to play the high range? I have a high range embouchure that lets me play trumpet parts on the tuba, but I can't seem to get it to work on low notes. And I have a low range embouchure that lets me play tuba parts on the trumpet, but I can't seem to get it to work on high notes. Is it my mouthpiece? Do I need to get a different key tuba? (I play a school BBb; I think if I got a 5-valve 6/4 CC tuba it might solve all my problems. Or maybe if I could get one of those York things, that might work too.) What do you think? Should I switch to saxophone?

I wouldn't wouldn't waste my time on something as good as a saxophone... only a few ever master it. Besides, it sounds like you have the perfect embouchure for a double French horn!! :D

I'm confused.

when I try to play the tuba (a 186, with a Bach 22 or somesuch) this strange sound comes out, that has nothing to with butterflies and electric guitar distortion? what am I doing wrong?

How far are you push down the valves? You know you're only supposed to push them down half-way, right?

For some reason, Hetman Piston oil feels great on Miraphone rotarys.

Anyone else had a go?

Sorry if I seemed blunt.
I would put a good signature here, but i dont have one, so this will make do.
