On my recent trip to London (where the legal drinking age is 18':D') I discovered the joys of "real" ale. This is traditionally brewed beer, served at cellar temprature (chilled, but not cold.) and drawn from casks. Some of my favoriates were Adnam's bitter, Adnam's Broadside, Youngs bitter, and Bomarbier. Although it is best served in a historic pub, you can get some of the beers in bottles in Canada. Not quite as good, but close. Of course, beer is not the only drink to be had. Fine scotch and "New world" wines (Australia, New Zealand, Chile, etc.) are all quite excelent.

(also, many american and canadian micro brewed beers are quite good.)

Cheers!

D. all of the above....

In different situations, each beer has its merits. On a hot summer day a good cold light beer can hit the spot. However, with a good meal either an amber or stout would be more to my liking.

I ditto the preference for Harp, Bass and Guiness.

We also have a good local brand here in PA called Yuengling. They make a good selection of different flavors of beer, including a pilsner, a lager, a pale ale, a stout and even a darned good light beer.

That's why I always try to hit up the Happy Hour at the local bars. It's great to sit down to a $2 22 oz. of any draught after a long day of classes or practicing.

What?!! Only 3 choices?? I live in Belgium! There's 6 completely different kinds of beer in my cellar alone, and about 60 in the supermarket...... The specialist shops come closer to 250.

In the Iraqi theater of operations, alcohol is strictly prohibited. At this point, I'd take any beer I could get! It's been almost three months since I've had a beer.

MGD Light or Coors Light was always my standard. Now that I'm not a resident and have a real job, I think I'll migrate back to Killian's Red or Guinness.

For the record-
black & tan is guiness w/bass (or any ale)

black & gold is guiness w/harp

the order of beer ascendancy goes something like this:

american mass lager
red ales/ambers
wheat beers
brown ales/bitters/milds
pale ales.oktoberfest
ipa/stout/porter/tripls/dubbels
double ipa

just my personal preference...the only kind of beer i can always drink is something hoppy...one needs to be in the mood for a dopplebock

90 minutes ipa by dofish is a good one...
dreadnaught by 3 flloyds is good (or so i hear)

most overrated beers for me
bass (too sweet for my taste)
red stripe
any beer that costs less than $6/6 and has the word "premium" or "select" in the name.........barf

No argument here that the Belgians have some of the most varied and interesting beer in the world, particularly your lambics and fruit beers. :)

I like the beer that I brew best. But if I could only have one beer for the rest of my life, the choice is simple. Guinness Draft.

Take my advice, don't drink until you are old enough to do so legally. It is a bad enough idea when you are old as it is a mild poison, but when you are young, it is one of the worst things that you can do to your body. Also, from experience, nobody is old enough to drink until they fully understand the ramifications of the act, and that can be as young as 40 or 50-ish.

Thank you

You're talking about this one?

It's weird to see how some very standard local beers are treated as exclusive specialty beers abroad. Dutch beer lovers tend to describe Heineken as horse p%**. It's a very ordinary lager there. Something similar is the case with Stella Artois. Here it's a cheap, standard lager sold by every supermaket. In the UK it's marketed as a $$$ special luxury.

Heavy beer? Come around sometime and get a taste of some of the Belgian stuff. (Had 1 1/2 Westvleteren nr.12 last night. That's enough for a hangover. )

does anyone know how to take a song i have on file in 'Real Player' and make it a internet file so i may share it with a tubist on this board?
(You didn't get this from me)

But Google on "Streambox VCR" and you'll find a neat tool to convert RA's to MP3. FWIW, it's supposedly illegal in the US but not anywhere else.

That depends. How big is the file you have? Real Audio is a streaming format, or you can have the whole thing locally. If you have the whole file you can easily send that.

Borrowing the emotican....back when I could drink beer or anything else alcoholic without the above response at 3 a.m., I liked an Indian beer called Taj Mahal. Before they watered it down and made it more "American."

Other than that....I like sort of girly beers that are a little sweet, micro-brew stuff, but not the thin watery stuff like Coors that tastes like Panther Pi$$.
