Got home from a band rehearsal this afternoon and the AC outdoor unit was making one hell of a racket. I thought maybe the coil was frozen up and liquid freon was getting dumped back to the compressor. But... I've had the fan running and the compressor turned off for about two hours now and the compressor now fails to start. Oh well... It's fifteen years old and I suppose it's due. It's never caused any problems before so with the outdoor fan and controls also being fifteen years old I'm pretty sure the service guys will want to replace the complete outdoor unit instead of just the compressor.
You may find that the long term situation is not at all bad. When I replaced my 12 year old unit with a new 14 sear unit for a similar reason my electric bills were cut in half. That turned out quite nicely I thought. I will save enough to pay for the unit in 4 years.
Well... the AC is back up and running. Turns out it was the control board. I had a similar problem shortly after I installed the unit back in 2001 and the maker sent me a new board. The problem went away and the new board went into storage. All is well for the moment. I DID ask the contractor to give me a quote on a new system. I am going to give serious thought to upgrading to a higher efficiency unit. I'm 67 and I'd like to have a new system that stands a chance of outliving me!

As of today I have been representing the same insurance company for 35 years. I only got into this because I had no other option at the time. I never dreamed it would work out so well. I have been blessed beyond measure. You have been updated.

At present, we have a wisdome tooth update, a sinus update, and a hernia update. Have I left anything out? I'm quite certain that all of the above updates are important. I hope this update will become just as important.

Perhaps I should add one more update. I need to find a little more practice time on tuba. Oh, well. I am keeping up with all those important updates.

By-the-way... my earlier 'update' telling of my AC and computer woes turned out to be fairly easy to swallow.

- The control module on the furnace went bad. I had a brand new one that was sent to me fifteen years ago while the unit was still under warranty. Some minor rewiring and it was 'good to go'
- I self-diagnosed the display problem on my Toshiba laptop as a cable to the screen... bought a new cable off Ebay and had a local tech change it.

Total cost for both projects was under $300. Could have been twenty times that for new stuff! Happy days.

Guess I'll go shopping for a new tuba!

Well crap! It sounded good, anyway. That 'new' control board bit the dust exactly three days after it was installed. I have another one on order to the tune of $128. It's gonna get pretty warm in the next few days!.

The town I'm selling an inherited house in demands a 2% moving tax upon sale. I don't live there and I'm not moving - but I still have to fork over 2% of the sales price. Many towns have put these taxes on the books with some as high as 5% - crazier yet - some charge the seller and some charge the buyer and some charge both. You could be selling a house for example for $500K in a seller taxed city with a 5% tax and then buy another home in a buyer taxed city with a 5% tax and end up paying 10% or in this example $50,000 - just because you moved. A few will wave the tax if you sell/buy within the towns borders and in effect remain a captive citizen. So much for "home of the free".

Talk about coming up with ways to stimulate development and the economy!

...and don't get me started on the latest trend of "crash taxes" - even if it's not your fault and some idiot crashes into your car - you can now expect some towns to send you a bill for being involved in an accident in their town.

Some states have ways to blame a person partially for an accident they had absolutely NOTHING to do with. Don't know if it's true or not but I've heard it said that in California you can be found partially to blame is a drunk hits your parked car!

It's called "no fault" insurance. Minnesota has it. Basically, if your in an accident your insurance kicks in. No trying to figure who was at fault. It generally raises your rates by 30% or more to cover careless people.
