Maryland’s state song has pro-Confederate lyrics. Now U-Md.’s marching band isn’t playing it.

The University of Maryland is suspending playing “Maryland, My Maryland” at sporting events, citing the need to evaluate the state song’s pro-Confederate lyrics, a spokeswoman for the school said.

“As part of the university’s efforts to reaffirm our values as a campus community, we are assessing the songs that are played at Intercollegiate Athletic events,” U-Md. spokeswoman Katie Lawson said in a statement. “We are suspending the playing of ‘Maryland, My Maryland’ to evaluate if it is consistent with the values of our institution at this time.”

The Civil War-era “Maryland, My Maryland,” with lyrics that mention “Northern scum,” has previously been the subject of debate. The song is set to the tune of “Lauriger Horatius,” more commonly known as “O Tannenbaum.”

Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

Part of the original poem, it is buried in a stanza no one sings or knows unless offense is sought.

There must be mass hysteria whenever the German National Anthem is played!!

I went to the University of Maryland, and marched in the band for 5 years. 3v is right, this verse is buried in the lyrics, and although we all knew about it, nobody cared. If anything, it is an important reminder that things weren't always the way they are now.

That said, nobody is likely to notice that the 16 bars of "Maryland, My Maryland" are missing from the pregame show. More likely that the drunk fans will just think "finally, they stopped playing Oh Christmas Tree."

BTW, they remaned their football stadium a few years ago from Byrd Stadium, because Mr. Byrd had some non-modern views on slavery and secession.

Maryland has been around for nearly 400 years... Go figure that there is some messy history involved. If you dig in the dirt, expect to find... Dirt.

They can catch it sung by the Annapolis Glee Club at the Preakness.

For now...

The best part is how the University is gracious enough to only "suspend" it's playing while they investigate whether it should be banned.

As if there was any doubt!!

I guess it depends on where you itch. (Please consider the feelings of your fellow TubeNetters before giving specific details.)

My brain.
Pretty much every time I watch the news or read a newspaper, I get an itch in my brain that I am sure is a aneurism about to blow. Fortunately, it's still holding.

Immanuel Kant was a real pissant who was very rarely stable,
Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar who could think you under the table,
David Hume could out-consume Schopenhauer and Hegel,
And Wittgenstein was a beery swine who was just as schloshed as Schlegel.
There's nothing Nietzsche couldn't teach ya 'bout the turning of the wrist,
Socrates himself was permanently pissed...
John Stuart Mill, of his own free will, with half a pint of shandy was
particularly ill,
Plato, they say, could stick it away, half a crate of whiskey every day,
Aristotle, Aristotle was a beggar for the bottle,
Hobbes was fond of his dram,
And Rene Descartes was a drunken fart, "I drink therefore I am."
Yes, Socrates himself is particularly missed;
A lovely little thinker but a bugger when he's pissed!

Thanks for your kind words, B - if I ever amass one-fiftieth of your tech skills, I'll be a happy camper, indeed.......

On another front, I was mowing a few weeks ago, and the transmission on my beloved Gravely crapped out, and after taking her apart, I found this nasty surprise -

Image

(and no, the teeth are not supposed to be that small....the planetary gear bushings were so worn after 40 years of service that they wiped out that ring gear...)

After finding a replacement ring gear and clutch cone (the teeth on the planetary gears were in surprisingly good condition, considering), I spent the last few days rebuilding the hi-lo planetary (pressing in and reaming new bushings, etc.), - today I buttoned her up, and she's back to running like a champ (no sooner did I get her running, an afternoon deluge came upon me, so it'll have to wait until tomorrow to get back to work  )
