I just had my John deere lawn tractor reconditioned. It has 400 hours on it. I learned that normal life is about 2000 hours. I've had mine for 10 years so it should last me another 20 years if I treat it nicely. A new one would cost about $10k with all the needed accessories. The reconditioning was a little pricy, but no where near the cost of a new rig. It's amazing how good it sounds and works now. Lawn and garden equipment is usually not a tuba related subject, but efficient equipment means more time to practice.

Something doesn't sound right about these numbers.

Have you noticed that Hurricane Harvey ended up in Bloke's back yard and now Irma is headed for the same place? So Bloke, what have you done to anger the hurricane gods?

The normal life number is from my repair shop. The hours on my machine are right off the hour counter on the machine. I thought is was 4000 but was reminded that there was a decimal point on the hour counter.

Tonight I went to a community band in the city where I grew up, next to the town where I now live after thirty years in other states. My school band director conducted one piece. I first played under him four decades ago, when I was 12. It was slightly surreal, but good.

As an update, my nephew recently graduated from high school and has started his freshman year at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.

He played trumpet, but with my nudging, also played tuba. He has tried out and made the pep band on tuba. He beat out two upper class men who played the year before. They even loaded him a rather nice tuba to use. You have been updated.

Look up Tubajug on this forum. He's a tuba player and school band director in Lincoln.

Yesterday I turned on the bass fireplace pilot so we can warm up the house a little at night. Holding back on turning of the furnace as long as possible. Winter is coming.

Do you run the treble pilot all the time, or only when you need to because it hurts your ears?

He normally goes with the carp pilot when he's available...
