Hi-
As requested....I don’t want to ‘shine up’ because everyone always asks ‘Is that a reproduction?’ if all bright brass...having it look this way makes it look like an antique too...

Horn was sooo beat up...a miracle it lives.....the third valve casing threads were half gone and horn looked like it was stepped on by a horse....had a nail hole in the bell where it was hanging for ‘decoration’ in a barn....

Horn is now solid.....a heavier vintage oil used and horn plays nice chromatically....large original receiver which is nice...smaller OTS Eb..50+ “ long, 10.5” bell...

I now have played a Miraphone. It is noticeably easier to play (easy blowing) than my normal horns and the intonation is spot on throughout the range. The low and high range are easier to get to and they are clearer. I am impressed.

Used in church this morning with brass group and will use it at brass quintet practice tonight. And yes, I used all 5 valves.

Huh, never heard of it, but am a somewhat regular consumer of navy bean soup (though prefer lima beans if available.) Do you use mashed potatoes?

The sarcastic side of me wants to say "there are no normal tubas". The word "exceptional" comes to mind.

The proper side of me says, I agree that a jumbo sousaphone may be a bit out of place in a church setting especially if you are playing in a quintet.

The Pit tuba is the go-to choice for sit-down gigs... it's just a little more odd. I smaller - though not small as in 3/4 - would help blend in a bit better. So, too, would an upright bell.
I've always considered TubaChristmas as being the reason for playing something a little bit different. Last year I took my Alphorn with a chromatic valve section (essentially an F tuba) for show and tell. This year I'll probably take the Holton 'raincatcher' sousa if I don't run accross something more interesting between now and then. We always spend some time talking about the instruments.

Tuba Christmas is the time to bring out the unusual, just because..... This year I will have to choose among a 1906 York 640, an 1892 J.W. Pepper Helicon or my Bubbie 5. I'm currently leaning toward my York. It is for sale for the right price. It is fun little 3/4 size horn that plays like a 4/4 or bigger. The helicon has been there before and will come out for the winter carnival parade just prior to the super bowl. The Bubbie is just small, different and fun.
