Popular again. "Whiskey" was rye whiskey, until Prohibition. When the distillers came back, there was all kinds of corn to use for a cheap base, and why not drink vodka anyway. I gather newspaper men, always grounded in tradition, notably returned to rye whiskey, so it's kind of ironic that as the newspapers dwindle and we're turning to Facebook to exchange rumors that serve as "news", we're also drinking their whiskey. Old Overholt rye is cheap and not that bad, perfect for a late nip after a long day in the "news room".

Canadian whiskey is not real rye whiskey, by the way. Not because the Canadians couldn't do it if they wanted to, and perhaps here and there they do, but it's hard to say because there's no standardization up there. In the US, rye must be 50% or more rye grain. You'll hear people call Canadian whiskey "rye" because (I guess) there's often some rye in it, and I wonder if that's sort of a holdover from the post-Prohibition shakeup - maybe the US and Canadian distillers were all largely rye based before, and after the US distillers switched to corn, that left Canada in the "rye" business.

Anyway, there are some fine rye distillers, many of them have been at it for generations. Sagamore is new to me, but I'm on the other end of the country. Heaven Hills has a couple from distilleries they bought, including Rittenhouse which won a big 1st prize a few years back; Michter's and Sazerac which I have not tried. Bulleit and Wild Turkey are decent, or were 10 years ago anyway. I have the impression that some of the rye whiskeys you see on the shelves are warehouse jobs - buy stock from someone else and blend it, but couldn't say which ones.

VO was my go-to drink, back in the day (I no longer partake).

Don't know if it's a "rye whiskey", but we always called it that.

It's presumably kept secret, lest some rascal use that knowledge to get a boost up on the way to producing a spirit that would compete with Seagram's VO [rolls eyes.] I guess the general rule is, if it's bland, it's corn; if it has some flavor, could be some rye in there.

Back in the day, we could only get Jamesons, Bushmill or Powers. I liked powers.

If it’s Canadian, it’s Crown Royal.

I prefer lighter whiskeys, bourbon and peaty scotch gives me a headache...

My personal favorite is Bulleit. It's not particularly good or bad, and therer are certainly a lot of better things out there... But I guess we all just get used to what we get used to.

Once tried a bottle of high proof Bulleit. A friend asked me how it was... My response was "it's quicker." :)

Tough crowd - will it be acceptable to booze connoisseurs if say I used to drink it?

Much of the concentration is given to "that one lick" in Rosenkavalier, but what's been giving me fits is that small solo in the middle. Last night at rehearsal, I finally started hitting the first G# consistently instead of undershooting it.

And not a moment too soon, since the concert is in two weeks!
