Re: Update Update
Last concert of the Fall Community Band schedule was last night.
It was a great experience. (My first one)
I’m not sure I can wait until next September to start up again!!

Re: Update Update
I was about 30 at the time of my first band experiences, two concurrently, wherein neither of them were really about classic marches. One ran to show tune arrangements, the other to Persichetti and Dello Joio and the like. I graduated from that to a band that plays nothing but classic marches, and have been there ever since. The only thing missing, is that we haven't taken on Claudio Grafulla's 1861 classic Washington Grays.

Re: Update Update
Every now and then, my sister and I give each other a musical instrument for Christmas. This year, she surprised me with an Olds Ambassador trumpet. A very early Fullerton model with a serial in the 53,000 range, it has the Los Angeles Olds-style mouthpiece receiver, bottom valve caps, and bell rosette; nickel water keys; RH pinky ring instead of a hook; and nickel 3rd-valve slide outer tubes with no stop mechanism. In essence, it presents as an LA-built horn with the exception of the bell braces.
It appears to have been recently relacquered, has not a single dent, scratch, or blemish on it, and looks like it was redone just last week. One bottom valve cap does not match, but it hopefully won't be hard to find the correct one.
Sis put it in a brand-new SKB case. Also included were good early Elkhart Vincent Bach Corp. 1 1/2C and 10 1/2C mouthpieces.
I've always wanted a Los Angeles Ambassador trumpet for my collection. This one's certainly "close enough for jazz". I haven't had a chance to give it a toot with my fave mouthpiece yet. It's gonna be a fun and memorable test play...

I really liked my Mendez trumpet.....I need two "Pull" slide extenders cause me hands not big enough for pushers.
Other than that, gee we gots winter here. Rained !! quite a few days in the last couple weeks, and last couple days 30" snow on the mountain 45 minutes from me straight up. Here...42 degrees and finally the sun has come out. So I'll go into town for lunch!

Re: Update Update
I am a big fan of triggers on trumpets and cornets instead of throw rings and thumb saddles. My King Silver Flair trumpet has a 1st valve trigger--perfect for getting 1-3 low D in tune. The 3rd valve ring really only gets used for the 1-2-3 low C#.MaryAnn wrote:I really liked my Mendez trumpet.....I need two "Pull" slide extenders cause me hands not big enough for pushers.
One iteration of the Reynolds Medalist trumpet was an Ambassador with a 3rd valve stop rod and a few other trim upgrades. I purchased one on behalf of a co-worker for her daughter and that trumpet was an absolute gem.

Re: Update Update
I get a chuckle when I see packaging these days that gives specific instructions for recycling (How to recycle) Like "remove paper label" or telling which parts are or are not recyclable. I know it's the next step, but still seems really far off to me. Especially when people still have trouble putting things in the correct can to begin with (even as single stream). So removing a label? Uh huh, sure. (Yeah, right)
Seems especially chuckle-able since there have been two local news stories this past year about when materials collected as recycling that aren't actually recycled. Like black no 5 plastic (like carryout containers)... They had been shipping them to China to be processed there. But there was so little money involved in it, they had to stop. So now, it just gets sent to the landfill anyway.
Alkaline batteries are also not recycled. They had been collected as battery recycling... But simply so they would be pre-sorted to recover the rechargeable batteries (fire hazards) and the alkalines are sent to a different landfill. No recycling whatsoever.
But whatever, I guess it's all better than nothing. And I sure don't ever want or need people to start policing how our trash is thrown out, or how good of a job we've done to prepare our recycling. Meh.
Sidebar: I've been fascinated in the past with the concept of "shipbreaking," which is the process of cutting apart old ships (military, barges, ocean freight...) to recycle the metal. Truly, one of the worst jobs on Earth. Horribly dangerous, dirty, and pays very little to the workers, and done in some very poor places (like Bangladesh). Kind of makes you stop and wonder if it's really worth recycling the metal at all, if it can only be done that way.

Re: Update Update
Our local community finally realized what a scam recycling is and stopped doing it.
Some enterprising kids will still take your bottles away for $19/mo.
Which is a better deal than the officially sanctioned composting scam which will only cost you $40/mo.
$40/mo to throw away, er, “compost” your banana peels, coffee grinds and egg shells!!

Collecting deposit bottles and aluminum cans also had the benefit of occasionally discovering a stash of discarded Playboy magazines!!

What'd they win?
I got to take a picture of someone marching with an upright up in a new england parade, and for the low low price of a good word for their nfl team.

My wife found Jazz at Preservation Hall 4: The George Lewis Band of New Orleans (Atlantic, 1963) at a yard sale for $1.
It’s in excellent condition and sounds great.
In proper hands, the clarinet is magnificent!!
