I just got a new ibook and I want to start recording and editing with "Garage Band". I still have to buy the imic (basically an external sound card), but was wondering what mic you all use that sounds best for wind instruments (particularly brass of course). Thanks a lot! Matt C.

PS: If any of you are Mac users and know of a better recording/editing program, I would be interested in knowing that too. I am new to Macs.

A Shure SM57 on a tripod boom stand for performing and recording gives me the sound I prefer.

I've still got Audacity, and there are a few others out there (AudioRecorder, etc). I haven't used GarageBand to record, so I haven't yet looked around to see what its shortcomings are.

One of the corps I marched with records their horn warmups & rehearsal bits directly to an iBook through a USB preamp thing; I'm wracking my brain trying to remember what app they were using (not Pro Tools, but something along those lines).

I have used a pair of Audio Technica Midnight Blues 4000 (MB4K) for a cheap pair of mics. Low frequency response is lacking, so they wouldn't make good tuba mics. I also have a pair of the Audio Technica AT3035 mics. These are good.

For recording onto a computer, I've used a M-Audio Duo interface and Audacity software. The Duo supplies phantom power to the mics, does the analog to digital conversion, and interfaces it to the USB port. The Duo is no longer made, but there similar boxes are available from Tascam, Edirol, and possibly other brands.

I use a Rode NT-something or other stereo mike. I bought an M-audio Transit USB box(?) for input to my iMac. I am just getting up to speed on Garageband. I'm not happy with anything so far but the mike, which worked very well when I was recording directly to CD ( I use a Bluetube preamp.) I got the iMac on the advice of a friend who wanted me to collaborate in recording/composing projects, but the quality of both is less than what I expected. I get noise and pops in Garageband that I did not "put" there, and also the metronome doesn't seem to be able to stay steady while recording....it goes tick tick tick ticky ticky tick.

I did manage to 5-track something last weekend, working on mike placement and input levels etc. I needed to buy the USB interface to get the synch working. Using the built-in mike input caused a delay that had additional tracks out of sync with the first one. I know a lot of people swear by this technology but it seems like kid stuff to me, that is, not the pro level I was led to expect.

MA, who wishes she had spent the same money on a hard-disk recorder instead of the computer.
