I preface this by pointing out that I know very little beyond turning on a computer and using the few programs I need, so I am not a techno geek by any stretch.

Suddenly I find myself in need of a significant number of old Microsoft Word 3.0 files created in the late 1980s/early 90s on a Mac SE. Much of this material is from my grad school days. Everything I now use (and would potentially be using to manipulate/edit this material) is PC-related.

I assume that it is possible to make these old text files transferable in some way, but haven't the foggiest notion of where to start or how to do this.

Do any of you with more experience in this aspect of computer technolgy have any advice&/or wisdom you wish to share? or, can you point me toward a resource that may be helpful?

Find someone with a Mac

Current versions of word will know what to do with those files on either the Mac or the PC. There are a few good ways to get them transferred in a usable format.

You can e-mail them to yourself one at a time. Make sure to shorten the file names before sending them. Send the e-mail from the mac, retrieve the e-mail from a PC and save the file on the PC side.

You could get another mac friend to drop the SE on their network and transfer the files to a new mac and burn the files onto a CD.

Yeah, later versions of Word should open these docs without a hitch. The trick will be actually getting them onto your PC. Aside from the fact that PCs are not inherently able to read Mac-formatted disks, if your SE only has a 3.5" floppy drive, you'd need a PC with one of those too. Emailing them to yourself might work, assuming you can connect your SE to the internet.

If I still had my old beige G3 with the floppy drive, I'd do it for you no problem. That went to Salvation Army a year ago, though, so you'll have to line someone else up.
