In that post, I posted a pic of my new RC buggy, and it turned into a mini-discussion about RC--including planes.

I had meant to post this video, but lost the link. Finally got it back. Wanted to show you guys what can be done with an RC helicopter. Note that this is an all-electric setup.

I have never seen a helicopter fly upside-down like that! I don't understand how it works- I would think turning a helicopter upside-down would make it accelerate downward unless you reversed the spin of the rotor.

Just change the pitch on the blades. They already do that to control rate of climb.

If it wasn't Dean on the stick then: 1) that dude has skills and 2) the camera man has skills as well just for being able to keep up.

Defintely not me on the stick

I do have a remote heli. But, its a fixed-pitch electric. Much smaller, much easier to fly. Because its so small its for indoor only (so light that even a small breeze will knock you out of the air, or take it away from you).

This heli has a full collective pitch system. Once its powered up and in the air, the pilot throws a toggle on the remote. That toggle sets the throttle to a constant rate (on this heli, I think that head speed is 3300 RPM). Once its set, the up-down dimension is controlled purely by the pitch of the blades--as Dodd mentioned. As you can see--this allows for a ton of aerobatic potential.

Ive seen some nitro vids too--and ya, they sound awesome. I think I am gonna stick with electrics though. Tuning nitros can be a pain, and with current battery and electric motor technology, the electrics are just as powerful (by weight) as the nitros.

Next year, I will be getting one of those

Agree on the tuning, still having fits with my car. But the sound/smell if part of it to me.
Electrics have heat issues, batteries don't last long enough and spare ae heavier than fuel. Power to weight I'm not sure about.
I don't think they can keep up powerwise. Like this .91cid, 3.1 hp engine that weighs in at 20.5 oz, only $350

Iny ideas which bird yet? Which engine?
I'd love a 4 stroke kit using this engine
Even better sounding. Or maybe find a multicylinder 4 stroke to fit in a one. Not sure anyone makes a multi-cylinder heli engine though.

Or even which Tx? The Tx has kept me away from choppers. Forgot about 3 channel AM systems. 6+ channels.

I did some research, and found that this heli is pretty much the easiest heli to fly. The counter-rotating rotors eliminates the need for a tail rotor, and is much more stable than those setups. No aerobatics here though, fixed pitch blades, and it has rather slow forward movement. Still, a great indoor heli that I can fly any day of the year in my house. The kit comes with literally everything you need to fly. (its a 4 channel heli)


I will be spending time this winter deciding which outdoor heli I would like, including the Tx. If I go nitro, it will almost defintely be a Raptor--probably Raptor 30. If I go electric, it will be the TREX you saw in that video. Both of those models can be found on the website I linked above. I also need to research the radio and electronics I want to throw in em as well....

Another thing I was thinking--the nitro sound is fun, for sure... but the electrics, being much quieter, may be easier on my neighbors....
