How do you ship a tuba overseas?

I need to ship a tuba in its case to England from the USA and the cheapest method is by parcel post, but the post office rejected the case as being 5 inches oversize (length plus girth) for all their shipping methods. DHL, UPS, and FedEx will accept the package, but offer only extremely expensive express service internationally. I've gotten quotes from $390 to $930 for air express, and even an ocean shipping company wants over $600. Has anyone found a reasonable alternative?

What kind of documentation did you need for shipping overseas with BAX? The three people I talked to there mentioned needing a commercial invoice, a packing list, a shippers letter of authorization, and an air waybill. It's a lot more involved than just the single form you fill out at the post office. Since this is all new to me I asked them to send me the forms I need to fill out in advance, but they sent nothing. Hopefully the driver carries that stuff around! I'm just nervous about using a commercial shipper because it's so different. The price is right, though.
