olympic opening ceremonies

So what was with the disco hits of the 70's and 80's during the parade of nations? You mean to tell me the Italians couldn't come up with anything better?
Village People YMCA, Donna Summer, Bee-gees, etc. I could believe it. i hated that stuff when it was modern.
The TV announcers even commented about it.....
At least it wasn't rap.... or KISS like the last olympics (or was that a Super Bowl?)
Pavoroti (sp?) singing was pretty cool though and the crowd really dug him. Its a shame i had to sit though 2 hours of disco to hear him.

It was surreal. I thought maybe it was a TV thing, until the commentators made jokes about it.

Man, I was there in the 70's, the chains, the leisure suit(lime green with white piping, won't even go into the shoes), the bad music. Thank God I didn't watch the Olympics, it could have been ugly. And don't get me started on the Fat Man. At least he could sing in the 70's and probably should have retired then, too.

The part that annoys me about the closing ceremonies is the Pav's "arrangement" of "Nessun Dorma". I've played Turandot, but then I've played the Pav under Emerson Buckley, and it is all about the big guy and not the beautiful music of Puccini in what can only be termed "the accompanyment". And that's the music they used there, too.
And Giacomo IS dead, and not able to defend himself...

The Winter Olympics has never been big on music. When they had the Winter Olympics at Innsbruck in 1976, the music for the ceremonies was provided by the little city band, which was very nice.
No, it's the Summer Olympics that has bigger than life music... Montreal 1976... Los Angeles 1984... Seoul 1988...
I thought the show was pretty good. Thankfully, NBC had all the countries who were parading through the stadium printed at the bottom of the TV screen.
