Yep, today is the day. Last chance for weiner schnitel at the Berghoff. They will close forever after today. The place is always jammed, why would they close a place like that rather than sell it for big bucks?

Yeah Brian - I'm going to really miss it too. Good authentic German food and at reasonable prices in the Loop. I read in the paper that during a typical holiday December they would serve 3000 people a day and 1500 a day the rest of the year. The place was doing well.
I'm guessing from what I've seen in the papers the older generation wanted to start to take it easy and couldn't get the younger generation to take the reins and didn't want to sell it to someone who might not keep it up to their standards.
The daughter is moving her catering company in and the place will be available for banquets, but I have no idea if the food will be the same.

I just recalled the Saturday in Fall 1968 when the entire Forest View High School Band walked in there, Sousas and all. We were downtown to play a half-time program for the Chicago Owls (Who?) at Soldier Field. Surprisingly, we were welcomed in and treated quite well. It was one of those rainy murky Chicago late October days. I can still remember the smell of brats, mustard and wet wool band uniforms. That was my first trip, one of many to come. I also recall the time that us poor college students would go there and fill up on the rye bread before ordering some sandwich and a beer. And this was a time when the waiters really were rude ( They've awfully tame of late).
Good memories gone forever. what a shame.
