Low Brass types are often very tapped into the tech world.

What do you use? Prefer?

The sad truth is that often the platform that we might prefer is not the one we may have to use, particulary when it comes to laptops.

Marty "who loves Macs but can afford Dells" Neilan

P.S. not to slam Dell, their quality to price ratio is outstanding.

I use a Dell P.C. . It's paid for and will serve for now.
My Lexmark printer had too many bells and whistles. It also has fax but I don't use it.

I like one that's adquately reinforced.

When the did that word creep into computer argot anyway? I can recall getting a CD in my MSDN packet labeled "Platform SDK" and wondering what the heck they were talking about. I'm not even sure of its precise meaning.

(Boy, talk about your "last step" ;) )

It's not the drop,
It's the sudden stop!

Right on, man! I hate the Windows XP too... the OS is just too complex. I use Windows 98 as well - it takes 10 times less time to reboot this computer than the other Dell WinXP POS in the house.

I thought FMS II on a 7090 was pretty good--sure, it wasn't SCOPE 3.3 on a CDC 6600, but you can't have everything...

It makes one lean mean machine... I'm running a fairly new Photoshop on it, it's only a 333Mhz

As others have said. I hated to mark the PC circle, as I am exposed to Macs as often at school as I'm exposed to PC at home. The fact is PC's parts are just cheaper, not to mention there are usually 734 different Window's versions from basic to professional to business super guru, and when purchasing the basic (XP Home), it's cheap. Macs are just more eye pleasing and easy to get along with though, I think.

When I was at Unisys, people still talked about the Rand home computer...

I suppose that's one reason that Unisys is a shadow of its former self--confusing computers with submarines could turn out to be a huge strategic error...

Use? WinXP (at work and home), Win98 (home), Win2K, OS/400, VMS, MS-DOS (various workplaces).

Prefer? I guess my current favorite would be Sea Launch's Odyssey Launch Platform:

(although the Atlas V and Shuttle Mobile Launch Platforms at Cape Canaveral are also high on my list):

:) Yes, but it made it VERY handy for the stock prices ("Dive! Dive! Dive!")

I have used Macs since they were introduced in the mid 1980s. And before that I used Apple IIs. I own a couple of PCs for one reason: There is a rumor going around that Apple Computer is going out of business. Nothing could be further from the truth! However, with talk like that, we loyal Macintosh users lose out on some great software for example:

• Microsoft Internet Exploder They stopped at version 5.23 for Mac and, since January 31 of this year, no longer offer it for downloading from their site.

• Netscrape They seemed to have stopped updating it since version 7.2. Some people swear by it. I think it's too cumbersome.

For Internet Chatting:
• Yahoo Messenger Says it allows for webcam use for Macs. Nothing I have tried works. Also does not transmit voice or use customized avatars. We can see those who have their webcams working.

• MSN Messenger Allows for picture in browser and customized name. It is also excellent for sending files instantly. Does not allow for webcam or voice use.

• Skype The best chat browser. Allows for voice calls but no webcam. Also sends files, though not as good as MSN.

• AIM Pretty much the same thing as MSN Messenger.

True. But AOL tends to use software designed by Microsoft.

I don't see much difference in the Firefox and Thunderbird browsers and Netscrape, except that they are not united in one unit--which I find annoying.

I actually prefer the Firefox/Thunderbird combination to Netscrape. But I usually use the Safari browser and the program called Mail to get my mail. No wonder even Microsoft recommends Safari on its Macintosh Internet Exploder page!
