Hymn/Sacred Solo for Trombone or Euph

I usually play tuba at church, but last night I took my trombone (there's another guy that -er- "plays" trombone, but... -- well, I digress). The organist heard my playing warmups and asked if I'd play a solo in a service sometime soon.

I'm looking for a nice accompanied hymn/sacred setting. I'm willing to transpose something originally written for another instrument, as long as the piece will "fit" trombone or euph. It should be a piece that would be familiar to most members of the (Baptist) church, but still contain enough music to be interesting to the more musically educated members. A well-arranged medley would be great, but I'm open to suggestions.

I've not even gone to any of the "usual suspects" to see what's available; I figured there was a good chance one of you would have a suggestion -- and I could spend my time whipping my high range back into shape instead of poring through publisher's websites.

Hi Joe,

Check out this site:

http://www.churchinstrumentalist.com/

They have quite a few arrangements there for various instruments. I've purchased a number of arrangements from them. One of my favorites is, "Beneath the Cross of Jesus" arranged by Bob Walters of Washington Music. Here's a link to that one...
Beneath the Cross of Jesus (baritone)
...has sound file but with oboe

there is a nice book called Sounds of Celebration by Daybreak Music and distributed by Hal Leonard, Arranged by Seth Pethel.

It has nice arrangements of some more modern praise songs paired with traditional hymns.

Worth Checking out.

SACRED SOLOS for Trombone with Piano Accompaniment - Rubank publishing - By Clair W Johnson -

TITLES: AGNUS DEI(BIZET) * ALLELUJA(MOZART)* AVE MARIA(BACH-GOUNOD) * AVE MARIA(SCHUBERT) * BEAUTIFUL ISLE OF SOMEWHERE * CALVARY * THE HOLY CITY * IF WITH ALL YOUR HEARTS from ELIJAH * O, DIVINE REDEEMER * PANIS ANGELICUS * PRAYER from CAVELLERIA RUSTICANA (MASCAGANI)* THE ROSARY * WHERE'ER YOU WALK.

Used this book on numerous occasions. Depending on what flavor of Baptist... might be too "uppity" or might be just right.

There are several Ebay sellers that advertise sacred solos for tuba/euph/bone. One of them is Windsor Brass

http://stores.ebay.com/Windsor-Brass-Publishing

There are also some others but I didn't see them in a quick scan. Right now, they are offering Easter music. I've seen ads for patriotic stuff, show tunes, etc.

You can pay and then download the music. I've not checked out the arrangements but it's worth a look.

One piece that I would love to do is Oh Redeemer Divine (Cantique de Jean Racine) by Maurice Ravel. This is a well known choral piece - I don't know if there is an instrumental arrangement. It would fit well in a Good Friday/ Easter Sunday service.

Others that come to mind:

When I survey the Wondrous Cross
Great is thy Faithfulness
Halelujah Let the Holy Anthems Rise

Alex "richer for having a Methodist choir director in charge of his last Catholic church choir - and a pastor who was not tone deaf" F.

Contemporary Praise by Keith Wilbanks is quite good.

There's also a collection called Contemporary Hymns in the same series.

Thanks to all for the suggestions! I've already ordered a couple of things based upon your recommendations, but if anyone else wants to suggest something by all means please do. I wouldn't mind having a half-dozen nice things to practice, and worked up ready to perform.

This is the other ebay link that I could not find the other day. This person often posts sacred/patriotic material and is located in SW Cook County, IL.

I've never seen one of the arrangements but it's worth a look.
