Perceived pitch drops while yawning?

Post by Leland »

Maybe some of you physicians know what's going on --

I've got a concert playing on TV right now, and I just yawned & stretched. During the yawn, it sounded like the pitch of the music actually bent downwards a smidge, and when I stopped yawning, it came back up to normal.

It always happens during a real, honest-to-goodness yawn -- you know, when you can kinda hear a bit of midrange rumbling/shaking inside your head. I can't replicate the effect when I consciously force a yawn.

Are the inner ear components being shifted inside my head? Is it something else?

And don't just say, "Dude, it's all in your head," because it IS... ;)
