Most owls do their hooting in the wee (3-5 AM) hours and there are lots of variations (my favorite is the Great Horned)--so it's probably not an owl.

Around here, that kind of burning would get you a stiff fine. Rules are vegetable matter only--you can use a limited amount of diesel to get things started, but that's it. You get caught burning an old mattress or styrofoam and it's $1500.

But then slash piles here come about as big as a house.

All this is done in the name of "air quality". But come July and August, the grass seed farmers in the valley set fire to their fields and the smoke is everywhere. They've got a strong lobby in Salem.

Great bonfire! We get to do them here, and had a really big one at our cub scout pack's "graduation" last spring. Let me know next time so I can bring the hot dogs and marshmallows - er, after the artillary! (Though I do wish I could have seen it!)

I agree with you with the red line and circle through the gas company logo. What a stupid name; they can't make up their minds: sit? go? ...

Re: bird call (a very strange-sounding one) question...
