This thing actually won the "Best of Innovation" at this year's CES:

That's really funny, particularly when you consider that the Westrex lathes used to cut the master didn't have any of that fancy stuff.
Maybe I'll start offering my $5,372 crystal set for "sound quality unhampered by the deficiencies of power supply design". I could sell replacement demagnetized catwiskers for $300 a pop.

As usual, somebody already does it. (slightly cheaper)

But there seems to be no source for new 2,000 ohm headphones. My mom threw mine, and all my radio junk, away long ago. My first real radio was a single 1T4 tube with the standard AM tuning capacitor and loop. B+ voltage was a 45-volt battery that looked like an extra long version of the standard 9-volt battery. And the universally essential 2,000 ohm headphone.
I still have my 4-tube Knight Kit Star Roamer shortwave radio I built in 8th grade. Seen here:

How come my vinyl records won't stick to the refigerator? ...and I've never even used this machine.

I note that the crystal set site sells a matching transformer for 8 ohm headphones which is better than nothing.
It's really surprising what can be used as a detector. My favorite was a razor blade contacted by a pencil lead wired onto a safety pin.
I recently ebayed the front end to a Heath Comanche receiver that I've had sitting on my shelf for decades. I was surprised at what it fetched.
I still have a WWII shipboard receiver that was decommissioned in 1945 in Yokinawa. A bit of history--an old rack-mount Western Electric power supply provides the B+.
