Chili Dogs

Okay, I realize that to Hot Dog purists that this will be blasphemy, but I need to drop a few pounds. Unfortunatly, since I broke my hip and back(short version) I have put on 30 pounds. I made Chili Cheese Dogs that came in at 236 Calories each last night. Here we go:

Whole Wheat Rolls
Turkey Dogs
Turkey Chili
Onions
Non-dairy, low-fat cheese stuff


They were suprisingly great. I grilled them and then steamed them to soften the roll and melt the "cheese."

Mmmm, Mustard. I knew that I forgot something. Now, does anyone recommend a particular brand for this project? Remember, we are off topic so, pictures ARE allowed.

The cheap yellow kind, what else. My preference is Plochman's. The one in the yellow barrel.

I have tried the exercise bike and elliptical, but can't do it. I then make the choice of percocet and exercise (with three years of medicine eating a hole in my stomach lining) or eat healthier. Unfortunately, my injuries occurred in Iraq before we had easily accessed medical facilities (13 miles of highway north of Tikrit stood between me and X-rays), so they were left un-diagnosed until they were too severe for total or rapid recovery. So, low-fat, low-cal it is for me.

Over refined carbohydrates and high fructose corn syrup are what are killing America. The body doesn't digest them "normally:"

Over refined carbohydrates cause a spike in blood sugar that causes them to be almost immediatly turned into fat (oversimplified, but for this forum noone wants a biochem lecture) because the body can only store so much as glycogen for later metabolism any other way.

High fructose corn syrup, being a simple sugar related to glucose, has the -O-H part of the molecule in a different link of the carbon chain. To convert fructose to glucose so the body can use it takes an series of enzyme functions about as complex as that necessary to metabolize alcohol. So it puts almost an equally heavy load on your liver.

We have switched to 365 cola-no high fructose corn syrup(pure cane sugar), no sodium, no caffeine, no fat and only 60 calories(0 from fat.) It is from Whole Foods and is $1.99 for a six pack and tastes great. As far as the carbs, we try to do wheat everything, but often fail. My wife entered the police academy here in Killeen this week. We are trying to improve our diet to coincide with her excercise program so that she can get the most out of the six months.

Absolutely! When I used to work a lot in Hollywood, this was where I ate my lunch. Some of the hot dogs are named after famous people. I like the Huell Howser. Huell is a personality on the PBS station in L.A. who has several TV shows about California history. Pink's uses the kind of hot dogs with skins on them--they say they use Hoffy Wieners

but when you get those in the supermarket, they are the skinless kind.

Here in Vietnam, all the hot dogs are the kind with skins. (And, thanks for asking, they use only pork or beef--no chicken, turkey, or dog... they don't even know what a turkey is!) When I want a chili dog I buy Dennison's Chili with Beans. The buns use the same recipe as for a French baguette--they don't taste like Wonder white bread!

Yeah...skins! I took a friend to Pink's one time and I asked him how he liked it. He said it was great but that it kind of freaked him out the way the wieners "snapped!" :shock:

Not exactly chili dogs, but this place is the place in NJ. Frank O knows what I am talking about.

Deep fried hotdogs in urban New Jersey (go figure!) with the best homemade relish ever, and onion rings - really just strips and pieces - the size of a yorkbrunner. My grandparents used to bring me there since I was a toddler, and it was one of the top destinations for all the local high school students.

I took my southern wife up there once and she loved it, she always asks when we are going back.

FWIW, I did the Skyline thing one time and was less than impressed.

Ah yes...the famous Rutt's Hutt! Definitely a legendary place, even more so now that the original Callahan's in Palisades Park is closed.

"The Shizzle" might be a bit strong. I spent six years in greater Toledo while I was in school at BG. I made a few trips to Packo's. I think, like Skyline, it's OK for what it is. It's another place that offers natural casing dogs that make that cracking sound when you bite them. The chili is good, but, it's like the Skyline chili, not the Tex Mex kind. I love the chili mac, which they serve over Spaetzel (sp?) instead of spaghetti or elbow macaroni.

When I was in my teens, my family had a drive-in A and W Root Beer stand. Our lot was so small that we only sold hot dogs and barbeque to get 'em in and out fast. No time to fry burgers.
Mom took canned barbeque and chili and added garlic, peppers and creole seasoning to have the stuff tasting home made in minutes.
We ran the joint seven years. I never got tired of A and W Root Beer. :D
