Tet

Vietnam has its own version of New Years, called Tet. Since I was recently hired as a public school teacher (a public school teacher in a local school), I get their two week break. The holiday lasts for three days. Everyone returns to their family's ancestral home. I will go to the province of Dongnai (not too far from where I live in Saigon). Government offices will be closed Thursday of this week through next Monday. Everything, including supermarkets and taxi companies, will be closed from Friday through Sunday. On Thursday, there will be panic buying, much like what one would expect before a hurricane. Since I am already off this week, I will do all my panic shopping on Wednesday--I might eat up what I buy if I buy it too early!
Some TubeNet members thought this was an offensive term. It's not. If you knew your history about the Vietnam war, you know about what happened on Tet over 35 years ago (I can't comment on this because of my location). No one expected the attack when everything was closed!
I will never post an offensive item on this board. I can't.

I did not think it was an offensive term, I apologize if that's what you thought I meant. I know full well what Tet is. I merely was making a reference to the attack you mentioned (which is known here as the Tet Offensive). Sorry for the misunderstanding, didn't mean to offend anyone.

Remember, US History fans, the famous "Geo. Washington Crossing the Delaware" painting was on Christmas Eve and he was going to attack the Hessian mercenaries in Trenton- our own "Christmas Offensive".
So...
Happy Tet!
BTW: I'd like to see Vietnam someday. I'd like to try out living in one of those stilt houses and go up and down the rivers in one of those shallow draft boats...

The amazing part about the housing here is that it's so cheap. And foreigners can buy property here.
I have trouble understanding why a company like CB Richard Ellis puts up real estate like this:

Happy Tet.
Here's a great story I have about Vietnam. I was staying over at my uncle's place, which is in the country side, right along the Mekong Delta. It's a very quaint place. There's no indoor plumbing, electricity goes out propmtly at 6 in the evening, and the only thing saving your skin at night is a mosquito net.
My uncle built the bathroom himself. Because one small part of the Delta runs literally in front of his house, he dug a little stream that connects to a pond. Over the pond is two planks where you balance yourself while you did your business. There are walls around the planks of course for privacy.
Well anyways, I ate something that didn't agree with my stomach so I had this massive case of the s***s. There I went balancing myself over the planks taking a crap. After a nice piece of feces fell down, my head inched downward to see it plop nicely in the pond and all of a sudden, this fish comes out of nowhere, scoops up that piece of poo with his mouth, and disappears.
A couple weeks later, we caught some fish from that pond and had a great feast.
Please don't get any wrong ideas about Vietnam from this story. It's over 10 years old and it's really a great little country.
