I am stocking a few picks and strings for my guitar studio and for public consumption. I have found a few that I like, those being tortex picks, but I was wondering what some of you out there might use or like. Also, if you have run across any really cool or fun picks, useless or not, what were they and where might I find them?

All music stores have at the least a standard assortment of Fender picks in the various sizes and thicknesses, with the 451 medium being the common guitar pick, with the addition of the larger triangles and the smaller teardrop and the size in between being the most common; and Dunlop picks in both the nylon and the other plastic in their various thicknesses. Dunlop also makes both plastic and nickel fingerpicks for both guitar and banjo. And don't forget thumb picks for those who play certain styles, including Chet Atkins.

There are other picks, and there are novelty shapes, like the "sharktooth" for those who slide the pick against the strings to get the "swoosh" sound into a power chord, but these are the standards that have been around since the beginning and will still be there after the fads come and go.

Personally, I keep in my gig tackle box an assortment of Fender 451 thin, medium and thicks, the larger triangles in heavy and extra heavy for bass, Dunlop Nylons in .73mm and .88mm, a thumbpick with the edge reduced slightly, and nickel fingerpicks in .018 and .020.

I have found in smaller rooms with padding, you sometimes need a heavier pick than you think to get definition, and in larger rooms, like gymnasiums with the maple floor, you need the softer attack that something like the Dunlop nylon has, and everything in between.

I've even recorded bass with really thin picks because the engineer wanted the grind but not the attack for the particular song.

And this is in addition to your main picks: your fingers.

I don't like using a pick for bass but for guitar I have always used Dunlop...
