So the story goes....

An 8th grade boy comes home and tells his dad that he decided that he wants to play the tuba. Well, his dad says, Great, let's schedule you some lessons for Saturday.
Well on Saturday, the boy comes home from his first lesson and his dad asked what he learned today. The son excitedly replys that he learned to play an "F". Well his dad was somewhat underwhelmed, but plays along so as not to curb his enthusiasm.
The next Saturday, when the boy comes home from his lesson, his dad again asked what he learned today. The boy now says that he learned to play a "C" today. Again the dad is somewhat concerned, but will let the lessons continue for now.
The next Saturday, at 3:00 PM, after lessons, the boy doesn't return home. He finally comes home at 2:30 AM. The very angry father demanded to know where his son was all this time. The boy quickly replied, "But dad, I had a gig!"

That is how all of us polka geeks got started, right?

Being a kid in high school, I was used to playing in flats with stomach-stenway guys (accordian players). I was invited to New Ulm, Minn by somed polka band buddies for one of the last New Ulm Polka Festivals (late 60's). Sat in with a concertina and drummer and promtly had my first experience with a concertina the key of A. Way, way too many sharps for me! What a rude awakening!
