...I'm going camping soon, and need a good, basic knife (preferably something that folds). Looking for 1 knife I can use for everything "outdoors." Trying to be frugal, but willing to invest a bit.

Help?

What you want is a folding razor knife like this :

Will cut anything. Never needs to be sharpened. You just replace the blade. It is very cheap at Home Depot

I use one like this for work and I carry one when I go camping with my son's Boy Scout Troop . There is nothing better !!!

Gerber Paraframe is what I use for a pocket knife these days. For a multi-tool, it's the original Leatherman PST.

The Gerber is a great knife and fairly inexpensive, too.

I love my Leatherman multi tool. I use it on a regular basis. As a teacher, I've used it to set the intonation for my guitar students. I use it to cut the strings for my bass that I'm changing. To tighten my endpin on my upright bass (I'll be replacing it soon). When my glass cutter turned out to be a real piece of crap, I used the files on it to make a crude cut into some plexi. Because of this, it goes everywhere with me.

I have that knife you are talking about . It's made by Cobalt . Handiest darn razor knife I have ever owned !! When the blade gets dull just throw it away and get a new one out of the storage in the handle .

For a basic folder, go for a Cold Steel or Spyderco depending on whether you like serriations ( I know it is misspelled I just don´t have time to fix it). Just remember, if it isn´t a straight-edge, it will take a lot more sharpening skill to keep useable.

For a multi-tool, go for SOG or the Victrinox Swisstool. The steel is just better on those two than either leatherman or Gerber.

If you would care to get more specific on applications, I could help you narrow the field.

That was the only problem with this one. If I need to grip it tight when using the pliers, I need to get a rag or something so the edges don't bite into the skin. Otherwise, it's an awesome tool.
