Hey Everyone!

I am a huge Apple supporter, and I believe that they will eventually dominate the computer industry. As you all know; the Iphone came out on the 29 and I think that it is by far the best first-generation product ever.

I have been waiting for the Iphone for months, and I'm finally getting mine tomorrow. However, I was curious to see what everyone thought about the new revolutionary product.

I think that the WM6 phones are just as good, if not more compatible. The HTC range (ie Tytn and upcoming Kaiser) do more for the same money really, especially on Cingular(for US) or T-mob(UK) deals.
I have a Tytn and can't see anything that the iPhone does that mine hasn't for a year.

iPhone = something else I don't need.

I have a cell phone I don't really use (but has been darn handy at times) so I pay by the minute (expensive -.25/min- but, for the time I use much cheaper than any plan). I thought I wanted an iPod so got the cheapest one. Don't listen to it. I watch TV on a 5" black and white I got in 1984. My computer is eight years old but I still like it.

What's my thought on the iPhone? SUCKERS!

Why spend $600 on something that doesn't do things as well as "free" phones you can get elsewhere? Yeah, it's pretty but it doesn't have a lot of features that other (much cheaper) phones have.

I personally will NEVER get an iPhone. All I need is something that makes/recieves calls and maybe a few text messages here and there.

you know, i ALWAYS say i don't some of the features that the iphone has but i always end up with something that does stuff like this. my razr takes pics and videos, plays games, calls, text/pic message, mp3 player and a web browser. i have a laptop, camera, game systems. the thing is, i don't like to carry around my laptop since a little heavier and it stays connected with recording equipment, my camera i something i have to think about taking places (vacation). im saying that i just take my phone without thinking about it. and my xbox 360 doesn't fit in my pocket. the point behind the iphone is availability. think about a musical gig with a very boring book. there are a TON of things on an iphone or a regular phone for that matter that can keep you entertained. not to mention that the brower IS safari. it's a real browser and not some scaled down crap (like my razr :D ). a 2 megapixel camera. that's better than what some of my friends have... on a phone. and a top of the line mp3/mp4 player.

also, the innovative new voicemail. you can pick and choose the message you want to listen to. and all of the controls are user friendly.

so what if it has a high price tag. people are obviously willing to buy them. hell, i am and im a poor college student. and it is very pretty. it looks way better than any other free phone and that may be enough reason for some.

i plan on buying one when they get the bugs worked out and upgrade them to at least a 20 gig and they drop the price a little. i have a lot of media to put on mine :D.

Let's see, I have a cell phone on which I only speak. I don't text msg anyone, surf the net, watch TV, or listen to music with the phone. If I'm lost or don't know how to get somewhere, I'll use Mapquest before I leave or use a map in the truck. So I guess I won't spend $600 on an iPhone. I know, I'm a dinosaur, besides, I just bought another RV, to get away from phones, computers, etc. occasionally.

...then don't buy one. listening to music and watching tv/movies on the phone is only an attempt to replace the ipod. not to add another gadget to your collection. by combining all of the useful components it brings these features without all of the clutter. i agree with getting a map before i leave but here's a scenario: you're at the beach or camping and you and your friends want something to eat. you saw an advertisement for a pizza place but you don't know how to get there. with an in-depth nav system you can get there without guessing. i've also found out that the map labels certain roads red to indicate that the road is congested and slow and marks others blue to show that they're moving quickly. so not only is it showing you a location but it's showing you the quickest route. it's a magnificent machine that is well worth the price tag AS OF RIGHT NOW. i say right now because no other company is offering a product that lives up to the iphone. there will be products in the future that do, im sure, but not at this point in time. like i said before i'll wait till they upgrade storage and drop the price tag.[/quote]

I guess I gotta be a mugwump and admit I don't care about any of that. These days, I don't get sudden urges to do much of anything (except, perhaps, use the head). I kinda plan things out in advance. Seems I don't really want to be connected to the rest of the world quite that much. Computer at home seems to do the job and, like I said earlier in the thread, I have a cell phone I carry but don't really use. No one talks to me and I don't talk to anyone. I have two excellent classical music stations available to me as well as three NPR outlets so the car radio does fine. I like to hear what goes on around me so don't wanna have anything plugged into my ears.

I know as much or more about this stuff than the average guy but just don't give a damn.

What he said. Yawn.

$600 + $60/month? No way.

I've got a Blackberry Pearl; it's my first smartphone-class device. It was brand-new on the market last fall.

It gets my email, plays music, takes pictures, browses the web, has a maps application (even useful in Germany), does chat...

... and it's an antiquated, cobbled-together pile of junk when compared to the iPhone.

My Pearl:

- Gets my email, but can't seem to send pictures that were taken with its own camera. It can't read PDFs ("occasionally" means "can't") and may, or may not, read Word documents (won't even do Excel like the iPhone does).

- Plays music... one song at a time, with no playlists, shuffling, or continuous all-library play. It will supposedly play videos as well, but I haven't figured out the obtuse format requirements that don't seem to match any of the videos I've collected.

- Pictures are okay, but optically blurry, and the color balance is out of whack. They're almost as good as I'd expect from a microscopic lens and microscopic image sensor... but they could still be better.

- Web browsing.. heh. Right. At least NOAA has a version of their site that's optimized for mobile devices, so it's my most-used bookmark on the Pearl. Other than that, looking through regular websites ranges from lame to bad and, eventually, to disgustingly unusable.

- Blackberry Maps isn't bad, really. No satellite imagery, but the screen resolution would make satellite photos look crummy anyway.

- Blackberry Chat is pretty cool as long as the person you'd want to chat with also has a Blackberry. I've only used it often enough with one person, but she's now got an iPhone.

Besides these features, the OS running the Pearl is ultimately what makes it undesirable. The device's settings are scattered all over the place and sometimes can't even be found in Help or through a search. For example: the scroll ball can light up when you get a call; but to activate it, you won't find the setting in the Keyboard/Screen selection in Options -- you have to open up the phone application, scroll to the very top, press the Menu key and dig into the Options selection there.

Another example is when the phone randomly gets stuck in Multitap typing mode. You won't find it in Screen/Keyboard, nor will you find it while looking for Keyboard Shortcuts or even Typing Shortcuts. Instead, you have to go to Language (?) and make sure you've got the correct selection in there.

And -- I've sometimes waited for what seemed like whole minutes for image thumbnails to load from the MicroSD card. Sometimes it's even stalled with the flipping hourglass icon that makes me believe that it's thinking very carefully for some reason. Jeez. It won't even sort the files the way I tell it to sort them.

So.....

The iPhone gets my email and lets me read it exactly as if I were on my home computer. It organizes & plays music as well as an iPod. Its pictures actually look pretty decent, mainly in terms of color cast. Its iteration of Safari gets me the whole web page (I can do without Flash ads anyway, so that plugin isn't missed). My picture collection not only looks good but is easy to browse and show to other people. Its Google Maps app (soon to be added to other phones, btw) is the next step beyond what my Pearl does now (no GPS? so what, it's still inaccurate anyway). Chat... hmm, maybe in the next software update or two.

After considering everything, of course I want an iPhone. I'm probably even going to get this first version now, and by the time I'm ready to upgrade, they'll be at the 3rd or 4th version anyway, which will make that next upgrade even more worthwhile.

Easy enough for a 3-year-old to use? I wouldn't have believed it, either.
