Jack Mercer ( 1910-84 ) = Popeye
I heard somewhere that Mae Questel actually did Popeye's voice but Jack Mercer got the credit because no one would believe a woman could talk (or sing) like that. This proves that it was possible! Incidentally, Jack was hired by the Fleischer brothers to work as an in-betweener. He often sang like Popeye during breaks... Richard Fleischer heard it and he became a voice actor! He later did several voices in the 1960 Felix the Cat series.

I haven't gone looking for throat singing much, but that first posted vid was pretty darned cool.
I'll have to try recording myself to see if what I think I'm doing actually comes across as clearly as it does in those videos. I can hear pitch changes in the overtones as I vary an "R" sound, especially while "humming" through my open mouth.
Cool stuff. Now I have something to shoot for (and to annoy everyone else.. lol).

There's a guy here in town who can do that; even though I knew he did it before I heard it (in a musical meditation session) it still took me a while to realize that it wasn't someone playing a whistle in perfect harmony.
