My son cranks it down to 75
The fix I use is no central air. I have split level house. Put in ONE 10.000 BTU window unit in the upper part because cold goes downhill. Whatever cooling you get from that is what you get regardless of thermostat. Lately, with the fine weather, it's been getting in the upper 80s farthest from the cool. So use a fan.

We sorta have the equivalent of window units...but its 3 "central" units that each do a part of the house.
Wish I had something like that. Window units are a little bit of a pain in the butt. To get a good seal in the window, you have to make a wood holder/frame/filler to go around the air conditioner -- and I have those stupid sideways windows. Then have to take it out and clean the crud out of the coils in the fall. I keep the filter clean, but crud still gets in the coils. Then put it back in in the spring. One saving grace is that they have gotten cheap enough that it's not a big deal to get a new every three years. But then a new wood holder/frame/filler has to be built.
