I'm glad you have come to the defense of magnetic tools. I use them A LOT. For most of what I do, the magnetic tools serve a very good purpose.... to put reasonable-looking horns in the hands of folks at a reasonable price. The $3,000 overhauls are nice but only make sense to do on less than 1% of the horns out there.

That's an interesting observation regarding just replacing the straight section of leadpipe... and normally not the crook. I think this might have something to do with the fact that the normal condensation (and food particle) path is on the inside of the bow where the material is quite a bit thicker than on the outside (because of the stretching that occurs when the pipe is bent). This sort of reinforces an earlier comment of mine that ALL yellow-brass instruments suffer with some degree of 'red rot'. You just don't know it's there until you see it eat through to the outside.
